While at "Peugeot Parts" near Ferrybridge today, this little beauty pulled up alongside us.

That dash reminds me of somewhere I've sat before (apart from the steering wheel being on the wrong side)...

Ah yes. Talbot Samba, anyone? (I'll get me coat.)

And in the back window...

Blimey!

I had a good chat with the owner - he has heard of us; I told him he would be very welcome here and asked if I could post some pics up (hence this thread).

I am sure he'll tell us all the details (and he knows ses oignons!) when he finds this thread.

It also sounded as sweet as a nut when he drove off - the churning-over of the hot engine was especially familiar, but once it fired the sound took me back 30 years...

I've seen a Red 4 door 104 around Bourne a couple of times- it also looks in very good nick and used for normal stuff like shopping.

They used to be so common in France, sat outside a branch if E Leclercs or Supermarche, usually white, invariably battered.

(Although my wheel's on the 'right' side).

Do like that sporty steering wheel they fitted to the 104 - Wouldn't look right in my giffer mobile, though...

I had one of those (well, it belonged to my mates ex-girlfriend, and somehow it got parked up on my drive for months). In a good metallic gold, not too much rot, with an immaculate interior, alloy wheels and good tyres, but poor ignition switch which meant it wouldn't start. After weeks of sending her texts asking her to move it, I resorted to saying if she didn't take it, I'd sell it. I stuck it up for sale for £20, but no takers. I then told her I'd dump it in a lay-by somewhere (you had to pay scrappy's to take cars then) if she didn't pick it up within the week. She didn't, so I then did, having someone tow me to a big layby, leaving the key in the ignition.

Funny thing was, most cars left there for more than a couple of nights seemed to be burnt out. It was there for about five weeks, untouched.

I feel guilty about that now, dumping it so the council ended up with the bill. I hope they traced her and made her pay, but I never heard anything more about it, I doubt she did. I apologise to the council concerned, but as they now charge owners a fortune for towing away badly parked cars, I feel my pangs of guilt receding

What an entirely likeable little thing. I remember there being quite a few LNAs around in my youth but these seemed much rarer.

If anyone wants to know anything particular, be sure to just ask I'm happy to share.

She just needs some cosmetic work doing in next few months before all the shows start. Going to Skipton car show at start of June if anyone is going.

Nice car Bob, can't remember the last time I saw one of these round my way.

Brilliant, looks so much better with the earlier bumper/grille/lights !

Very happy memories of a red 104 Z from 25 years ago; I can smell it now (that old French car aroma, nice), a brilliant car !

I really like these tiny and rather sporty looking 104  hatchbacks. My mum really wanted a 104ZS in the late 1970s, but the budget didn't stretch to one.

I went to the launch of them as a toddler, at IDG on Atlantic Street in Altrincham - a dealership which has long gone. I don't remember it, but still have the 104 launch event song Peugeot commissioned, on a 7" Vinyl record. IDG often had French brochures. Not having the foggiest what they were on about added to the mystique. Codap replaced them in the end. Their brochures were in English.

Yours looks miles better with the earlier 104 Z grille and headlights. My personal favourite of the series has to be the ZS though - a car which deserves to be more well known than it is.

+1 on that wee car looking better with the earlier bumpers and grill.

as has been posted above, that is a very agreeable little car.

Didn't even know they existed until now, must have been way under the radar whenever I've been in France. Was the TabLot a slightly upmarket version? Only asking because it looks a bit* more plush inside, but only barely.

Pritty sure they were the same, just varies between trim level.

The edition of 104 is a style which I guess was trying to be trendy with the tweed. :D :D

I would agree with the ZS being the best looking and performing.

It just so happens I also have a ZS, it's very much a project but cannot wait to get it on the road.

Here it is.

It's a 1977 104 ZS so an early one.

Got it from a family in Norfolk where it had been sat for 18 years.

1124cc 4 speed.

Planning on keeping the colour but sticking the larger 1.3 engine in it.

Welcome on board, leachibob (Tom), it was nice speaking with you last Friday - did I tell you you'd be welcome on here?? ;)

And I'm VERY impressed with the conversion to the older grille, lights and bumper, because it looks like it left the factory looking just how it does now...

i believe that the talbot samba used a chopped down floor plan and modified panels from the pug 104.

Hey MarvinsMom

I thought both the Talbot and Citroën both were identical to the 104 apart from the headlights and a few panels. However when speaking to e287yba the other day where the pictures were taken at Peugeot parts West Yorkshire, he said the wheelbase of the samba was slightly longer. When looking online it does seem that way, by about 4 inches :l

It's a shame the panels for samba aren't the same as there are a few cheap replacement ones on eBay, at least Dean from Peugeot parts has most stuff brand new for the 104 :)

Posted

i wonder if the 5 door cars are longer than the 3 door ones, if so prehaps it is a 5 door floor that formed the basis of the samba?

funny cos they were quite common cars once apon a time, talbot samba's but like so many others there seems to be none left now!

the other thing is that when i was a nipper i wouldn't have wanted to be seen in one, just like the metro that me mam had. i hated going out in that incase someone saw me... now, well i love pottering about in my own metro and the same would be true if i had a little pug 104, which is a propper little car too, unlike todays offerings.

i guess i have even grown up, just don't care what other folks think or now i don't need to try and be down with the kids......

That orange one is the spitting image of my grans, that was an S reg as well. I think it went in 1985 or so, replaced by a red Samba!

I think the Samba was cobbled together quite quickly by PSA to fill a gap in the Talbot range when Linwood shut in late 1980ish, which meant no more Sunbeams.

Loving this thread. O/P's pug is stunning. Any updated or progress pics of the orange one please?!

Sorry for the late response, only just spotted this.

Unfortunately very little progress on the ZS project, hopefully getting stuck in shortly once I get the right tools for my next jobs.

Ever since getting the zs I have only managed to strip it down and give it a bit of a clean. The car itself is in pretty poor condition but definitely savable. Main hurdle is the rusted out inner front wings and passenger side rear bottom quarter. The rest of the car is all solid, which is a relief.  For someone who has not welded before Its going to be a steep learning curve, although when the time comes I may have a professional do it.

Engine is also seized but have not had a proper look at it yet.

Next step is get a small sandblasting gun for my compressor to clean up all the rust areas ready for cutting and welding.

Trying to find time to work on this gem can be hard with juggling all my other projects.

Here are some pictures from the last time I pulled it out to clean the 19 years of dirt off the inner wings and engine bay.

I am so jealous of your rev counter, as my LNA does not have one.

I thought ZS had 1360cc engines but yours is listed with a 1124cc is that right for the year?

Posted

I like your import 104, but I LOVE your ZS. What a cool little thing. Period colour as well - looks just right.
