Partridge Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 Yes, there's a difference between "want" and "internetz want" remember... Magnificent Rustbucket and Cavcraft 2
320touring Posted April 8, 2015 Author Posted April 8, 2015 How much welding of the floor pans would be required?I have not had a good poke about (only been under it to replace the brake line) But I'd say likely to be a fair bit. Welcome to come and see it for yourself
Lord Sterling Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 I would say - are you interested in an 827 Coupe. But I doubt as though you'd be interested. Good luck with sale though

Lord Sterling Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 That the lpg'd one?Yes. It is a bit shit but bloody solid though. LPG does work, I've ran it a few times on it. See my 'FOR SALE' link in my sig.
Magnificent Rustbucket Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 Jags are funny old things! People are enthusiastic about them, but asking if they actually want to OWN it gets the kind of response Billy Ray Valentine got in Trading places when he asked, "is there a lawyer in the house?" at that posh club. Cue mumbling, sudden pressing engagements and shuffling in the general direction of away!! Good luck with the sale. The paintwork and body other than the rust you mention on the underside looks pretty good on the photos, as does the interior. That's useful for someone who can weld because they won't have to do any paintwork on the car and that part costs a lot of money, if you want it done well. Welding takes a lot of time, but if you have the skills it doesn't cost a lot of money - and with decent paint work you end up with a nice looking car. Partridge 1
Partridge Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Jags are funny old things! I think many of us are here (including me) are simply not rich enough to run one. Or more accurately, keep one in good order without having to eat the leather trim because you'll have no money for anything else. I really want to own one, and I have the money to go out and get one tomorrow. But I'd be homeless and mad within eight weeks. The chap who started my jag obsession was pretty well off, but sacked his '40 off because he got fed up with it going FEED ME MONEY, NOM NOM NOM NOM when his very nice Shell pension came in every month... I think there's a "Jag Wage", which means earning over a certain amount, so you can afford to spaff money on welding, fuel, servicing and whatever else it throws up in your face, then still have enough to actually live. You also have to be a special kind of mental to own one. If I get a job I've just been interviewed for, there's a good chance there's an XJ40 in my karma, even then I would save for a few months to bag a really good one. Unless you can weld and have a good skillset when it comes to keeping old cars together, I don't really think a cheap one is the way forwards. Which is why mine will be closest to concors as I can afford, and I will hope, and pray it doesn't dry bum my bank account every month. Skizzer 1
Magnificent Rustbucket Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 I reckon Jags are fine if you can weld; they're not too many cars better described by, "would suit welder..." They rust earnestly, but other than that, the late XJ40s are pretty strong things which don't need constant attention, at least in my experience. Especially after they have dried out when you've filled all the leak holes with new metal. The late cars are much better for this than the early ones, whose fizzing electrics can be quite needy. Late cars have the bulkhead rust problem like the X300 though - but repair panel is still available for that, which makes things a lot easier. I think they suit a certain kind of person - you are definitely right with that. They're visceral cars, appealing to feelings rather than the spreadsheed. They appeal more to the Shiteist than the Piston Header - who loves the older Mercedes. The answer to everything that is not an MX5 is a Mercedes W124 over there. They don't 'get' Jags at all. I don't think running an XJ40 is ruinous though - it's not like returning that static display Bristol in the ebay tat thread to the road! Partridge and Skizzer 2
Bren Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Remember the old adage " If you even have to think about whether or not you could afford a rolls royce, you can't". Especially so an old jag, if you are lucky it will only bankrupt you.
