...UMMs!

They're ugly

they're shite

they're from a country not known for car manufacture - Portugal

they're still shite

but the urge is strong ...

Buy one.

They are good. I had one at my disposal when installing a concrete testing laboratory in Madeira in the early 90s.

I've had and driven a few and they are superb in an agriculural diesel 4X4 way where most maintenance can be done with a lump hammer,  We have used them for carrying dets or explosives cross country.  The only better and more amusing thing is a Munga  4x4.

Make no mistake, Mungas, despite hilariously quirky, are more complex than meets the eye and nowadays not exactly cheap to own.

They are so damn ugly,, does that make them cool? or is that just with us weirdos?

Posted

My pal has two Mungas. One is German, the other Dutch. Both ex-military. I'll try and grab a pic next time he drags one out.

a ratty pick up non runner in Lancashire just now

I'm sure they used to make transcats on a little industrial unit just down the road from me in the mid 80s.

There was a rumor going around that they closed down because the Russians were after them after the bonnet flew of one and killed a rusky soldier.

Probably bar room bullshit.

They seem to be quite suitable for chod collections.

This one however sadly lacks the 01 and confederate flag stickers, which are mandatory for this paint and wheels combination.

I'd love an UMM as well, highlight of Portugal holidays

Posted

Did they import these into the UK at one time? Sure I remember seeing them parked up at Southampton docks when I was doing a bit of casual trespassing in the school holidays. Would have been early '90s I guess. Didn't really know what they were at the time but that bonnet line is pretty distinctive.

yep, rhd as well!

I want a five door!

I should probably own up and admit that I won the auction for the Umm on ebay the other day.

Collection from Devon hopefully next weekend, I'm quite excited.

ah, it's in the fold - that kind of started the urge again!

They are excellent, make no mistake. Peugeot 2.5 TD coal burner is the one to have. Has puggy gearbox too. I' liked driving them and it feels like a van.

Ummmmm, it looks like the bastard love child of a Landrover and something else. I am slightly lost for words.

That looks fantastic.  If I needed a car that was less comfortable than a Series Land Rover and possibly less reliable that would be at the top of my list.

Can't wait to see the collection thread, will you be driving it back home?
