Filthy's Volvo 760 Turbodiesel

Hey gang!

First off, you can blame Mr Shitpeas for this, he sent me an ebay link and I couldn't resist its tempting contents.

I spent most of yesterday doing this sort of thing:

Undressing a Volvo T6 engine and wrestling and absolute forest of wiring, with the help of my good friend and fellow Volvo pervert, Nimminz (Mr Shitpeas' sticker supplier, he never posts here but sometimes lurks).

After that it was time to go and buy a car in the dark, as you do.

No photos of the journey, as it was a short, dull hop down to the far end of Durham and into Richmondshire to pick up this wedge of next-level shiteness:

A 1987 Volvo 760 TURBODIESEL with 199,000 miles and a big hole in the boot floor. It has no proof of a cambelt since 68,000 miles, a fucked wheel bearing, and a ZF autobox. #WCPGW?

Here it is next to Nimminz's 740 in Scotch Corner services:

I apologise for the small photos, they were taken on a DSLR but they must have had to squeeze through a narrow part of the internets on their way to me. I shall get more today.

Yeah it's staying that way too. To be fair, the car is a bit of a PUG anyway, and it's also a 764 in Volvo nomenclature, so the plate stays.

*Unless I get offered money for it. Any money.

Looks good on the later wheels!

(btw: image display size can be set, so it'l have been set to 640x480 or 'small' or something. Know how to do it on Flickr but not PB).

Posted

IIRC those are 940 wheels but aye, they do look smart.

LT van powered Volvos are for winners.

Is the T6 engine going in the 360?

Sadly not, I have that engine earmarked for an Amazon...

As promised, here are some more images of the JRG cuboid.

940 wheels indeed, I believe they are called 'pholus'.

I don't really care for them TBH, but at the moment I don't have the locking wheel nut key so I'll have to!

ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT SYSTEM FAIL.

The red bumper trim on the back makes it look like a Redline.  The lack on the front makes it look like a GL.

I approve.

What's that, you want more photos? Ok, ok, calm down!

Luckily I have a spare light:

What the seller called "The Big Garnet Turbo":

Apparently extra horsepower is hiding under the thing next to the throttle wheel:

Very thick soundproofing (it needs it!):

Very reassuring*

Nice... 8)   PUG = Leeds (UG).  I once saw a 'comedy' hospital radio DJ called Ivan Brackenbury at Leeds Jongleurs. True story.

Top motor. I have deep longing for one of these in derv flavour.

What sort of OMGMPG can one expect?

Posted

They are barely more efficient than the petrol versions, but they sound ace, like an old lorry that can rev to 5000rpm.

Posted

Yeah 40mpg is a distant dream really, but you can use veg oil, which i'll be experimenting with once I service the thing.

GLW that. In theory the D24 should be great on veg oil, but it hates cold starts on veg. If I wasn't such a mechanical fud I'd have advanced the timing to compensate.

Race you!!!

No way! Yours is a facelift with OMGAERODYNAMIC obscured wiper spindles and alloy bonnet. Mine must have been one of the last MY87 cars, the changes came in for MY88.

Uncle_DS20 had a petrol E-reg 765GLE for nearly twenty years, that had concealed wipers, and I've spent the past 30 years thinking all 760s had them - only to be set right now :)

Uncle_DS20 now has a 51-plate V70 that, he says, Is Not As Good At All. Still, he's had it since new (14 years in December this year) so it can't be TOO bad or he'd have got rid by now.

Geek stuff: Model year 88 760s got the revised front end, secret wipers, different wings, bumper, alloy bonnet, lights, grille, windscreen, dash, steering wheel, indicator stalks, sealed front wheel bearings, IRS(saloon only) and possibly other things.

I have an E reg 765 Turbo pez which has all that. These differences continued into the 960, setting it apart from the 940.

The best I ever got from my 740 TD was 42mpg on a long run, mid to high 30s average is more like it. Mpg isn't the whole deal though, they sound amazing and have an amusing power delivery. Foot down, lag....lag...lag...OMGPOWAHHH!!! Mid range pickup is excellent, especially on the manuals with the overdrive button.

Very nice saloon you've got.

It's very similar to my old one, mine was a petrol 2.3 GLE auto.

He had a "comedy" show on radio 4 doing his spoof hospital radio show.

example of his side splitting comedy:

"Here's a dedication for Valerie in Ward 3 who is recovering from cataract surgery that unfortunately didn't go well"

#plays REM This one goes out to the one I love

One eye love.... see what he did there? Repeat for half an hour.
