That Mk 2 Golf would cause the watercooled boys over here to have a jizz fit, like, because, OMG it already has a Jetta front end on it!

Great pic(s)! Looks like someone started to shovel the snow away at the back and then gave up...

That silver early 1960s Oldsmobile station wagon is a thing of true beauty :D . Hope the owner has a jet wash for the underside before it goes back in the garage though!Yellow Mustang is nice too.Challenger is nice too, although not really my cup of tea TBH - I think these 'new retro' muscle cars will be regarded as a last gasp from the oldstyle US auto industry prior to making hybrids and effectively being owned by the US Govt - which only Ford will escape at present.

Posted

Ooh too much... that Olds is very nice indeed.

Posted

Thanks all for the comments. The Olds and Mustang were both parked out in front of my office one evening this month. I was stuck working late and peeked out to see them there plus some massive lights. Turns out they were shooting some movie set in the '60s. The Olds is a 1962 Dynamic 88 "Fiesta" (What Olds called their estate/wagon) and it's the only one I've seen. It was very clearly part of the movie. I can only assume the Mustang ('65 GT Convertible) was also in the film. The G-Wagen is a Canadian Military LUVW C&R (Light Utility Vehicle Wheeled, Command & Reconnaissance). The C&R version has a hatch and turret mount on the roof which can somewhat be seen in the picture. I've not yet figured out what all the bolts around the rim of the wheel are for. Canada uses G-Wagens instead of HUMVEEs.Agreed about the Challenger, but I must say it was quite something to take a good look at. It's the first one I've bothered to take a close look at and it's the full meal deal SRT8 500 (Canadian limited edition) with 6.1L. If Chrysler tanks at least they're going out with a bang.

Love the wagon also...that brown Pontiac has more than a whiff of Chevette about it

Excellent stuff as ever. I can't help but liking generic boxy stuff like this...

Assuming both are RWD they must be amusing in your winter conditions, though with the woeful power outputs they managed back then perhaps it's not so much of a problem?

Posted

@Fordpoplier: That's because it is one :) Called a Pontiac Acadian, it's a re-badged Chevrolet Chevette. The Chevy and Pontiac started out almost the same as your Vauxhall Chevette, but with bigger bumpers and different headlamps, and was facelifted in the mid-80s with the grille and taillamps you see here. They were sold longer than the Vauxhall version, too. Additionally, I don't think you guys got a 5-door hatch version - but yeah, it's the same basic vehicle.@Spottedlaurel: Yep, I'm a big fan too! A friend in high school had a blue LTD Crown Victoria just like that silver one, wonderful memories with that. They'll swing their long rear ends around quite easily in the snow but we're used to that sort of thing around here! They had 150hp from 5 litres (lol  ) but 270lb-ft at 2,000 revs.

Chevrolet Suburban. Probably doesn't qualify as shite, but it has wheels for both the road and rail. Rail wheels great for avoiding road congestion, but I think I'd rather deal with that than with rail traffic...

OK, I don't know for certain what these are, but they appear to be multi-axled, two-lane wide driveable trailers. It looks like you sit at the very front there, underneath the platform of the trailer! I want to give one a go...

What a great house - shouldn't there be some Volvos/Saabs parked there?

Wow. I'm intrigued as to why the Canadian Department of Transport had sufficiently different rules to the US equivalent back in the day, to allow the importation of Micras and Ladas. Seems very odd to see either on the North American continent! Great pictures as always.

On the same site, or coincidence about the odd panels? :)
Posted

Ha! Good spot on the swapped Subaru doors, I hadn't caught that myself. Same site indeed, the monster was on the other side of the house.I think the Micra got flush-mounted headlamps somewhere around '88.Yeah Canada and the U.S. generally share the same vehicles but there are exceptions. Oddly there are some cars that are (were) legal in the U.S. but not in Canada, and vice versa. Canada standardized several aspects of the regulations with the U.S. just last year I think. Different market, though, so sometimes cars are sold here that just wouldn't sell in the U.S. We buy hatchbacks unlike the Yanks so Micra was sold here from 1984-1991 but not in the U.S. Ladas were here from '79-'98 although I think there are still a few dealers around that supply parts and service only. We got TVRs too until I think '94, U.S. lost them at the end of the '80s. There are numerous other examples, like we got the Nissan X-Trail when the U.S. didn't, etc. Thanks for the comments - as always I'll keep my camera at the ready for more. :)

Love the big old stuff, as usual, that Cadillac is great, and the 72 Oldsmobile Cutlass is particularly lustworthy. On the other hand, the early 90s Pontiac Grand Am shows where it all started to go wrong, and why GM is pulling the plug on the brand.

Posted

I've just decided I really like these. Are they basically a Mazda 323?

Posted Image

Posted

Nope, not until the 1991 2nd gen model. This one is entirely Ford. It was meant to share components with the Euro MkIII but ended up being completely different except for the basic profile and the CVH engine.

I've just returned from a fortnight in Canada. Fantastic place. Went from Toronto to Vancouver by train with a few days in Jasper. The amount of abandoned old rusty shite I saw along the trackside was phenomenal, particularly in the forests of Ontario, highlight was an old cabin in a clearing with six Lada Nivas in various states of disrepair. The plains of Saskatchewan are also great for abandoned shite. It seems most of the little farming towns have a field to just dump old shite in. The age range is anything from 10 years old or more, to stuff with running boards.Toronto has a fleet of open top Routemasters, still with all the London destination boards on. Vancouver has old RHD Bristol and Leyland double deckers with the roofs chopped off. I was surprised at the number of VW campers (Am no good with 'Types', but the eighties rear engined one) about. Also saw a few RHD jap imports in both Toronto and Vancouver - Figaros, Delicas and the like. Also, what seemed like half of the Vancouver Taxi fleet were Toyota Prius....I've got some pics from the train, not many though, but I'll post what I got.
