Shogun / Pajero

Looking at buying a Shogun or Pajero in the near future (ie this week).

There's this one on ebay:

It looks nice, but on enquiring to the seller about chassis rust (the first time I didn't get a reply, until I sent another saying I'm not going to bid unless I get a response), I get this:

Hi sorry did reply but obviously didnt send.

I only had it since december so not had need to look at it except cleaning it. Being 89 i would expect it to have some rust. All i know is that mother in law had it serviced etc regularly, whenever garage said it needed work she had it done straight away. It does have small plate above one side step, but like i say its 25 years old

Are these bad if they have succumbed to rust, I don't want anything other than the mk1 SWB 2.5

It is also, yet again, located in Somerset. Pretty much every car I have bought since 2012 have been in Somerset (or Bristol or Gloucester), and the only other Shogun  that interests me is in Somerset (Taunton - where I bought the Justy). :(

Whs^. Avoid 2.5d auto like the plague. Catastrophically slow and impossibly thirsty, seriously the v6 petrol one would be my choice, at least it's got the poke to justify the thirst.

Any series 1 is likely to have rust by now, yes they can be Very rotten.

You will be paying MAXIMUM SNOKAOS TAX if you buy now.

Oddly, the vendor can actually spell - that suggests that it might not be his. Mind you it's the early OMG CLASSIC version and not the council estate tattooed motability scooter trakkie bottom/slipper wearing Mark 2 model.

I used to sell these at a Mitsubishi dealership 20 years ago this year - they were a very good tram but rust does get them now.

In two minds with this. He won't check for rust (and won't now with a couple of hours left). The engine size doesn't bother me. :)

Might just wait until another comes up that's closer (and has brown interior).

Check the transmission carefully too, i've picked up these when still relatively recent models from auctions and the gearbox seems to be a regular weak spot on those with tow bars.

I have a soft spot for them, same as i have a soft spot for Defenders/Series and old Landcruisers.

Landcruiser 70 series seems to be the most resistant to the tin worm....biggest headache for all those is owners who think they can run selectable 4wd with locking centre diff motors in 4WD all the time, winding the things up and causing serious wear and breakage...and the owners who can't be arsed to pop underneath with a grease gun now and again.

You don't see square Troopers any more, they all rotted away?

Posted

I've no idea about this shape, the later ones with the DID engine seem to piss oil out like there's no tomorrow. As people have said they like a drink, a relation has one and reckons he gets no more than 21mpg from it. They are very good for towing by all account.

Posted

Square Troopers are bloody horrible. I made the mistake of owning one a few years ago. Hard to think of one redeeming feature. Utterly shit on the road, and pretty hopeless off it too!

Aren't the 2.5 diesels supposed to be spectacularily wank, in that they eat cam shafts or something?

Posted

Flip knows, there seems to be some divide over whether it's good or not, whether it's a decent engine or not. confused.

Indeed. A lot of people claim the later 2.8 is better, but they're good at eating timing chain tensioners and pretty notorious for cracked heads and OMGHGF.

It might be in the shit sellers thread already but without fail....

"I havent checked....."  =  "I did check, its fucked, but I dont want to say that."

EDIT to add - that one above looks nice but I reckon it will seriously struggle to shift its own weight with those wheels and tyres.

The 2.8 is a nice unit, fuel pump seals go but it's not the end of the world when it happens. Not overly good on fuel (get a 3.0 V6, it'll make you cry) but drive ok.

I've driven an L200 and a Challenger with the 2.5 TD engine, it's alright in an old school turbo diesel way, working around the narrow boosted power band.

Posted

I'm quite a fan of the mitsubishi v6 in shogun form, it's a trusty old engine and fuel consumption is so lousy in the diesel the saving isn't huge over the petrol.

I own a 91 2.5 auto Pajero, Its not too sluggish although I do tend to waft along, get about 25mpg local. The chassis on these is reasonably substantial, mine has a bit of surface rust, nothing terminal, the shell is mint.

Pay careful attention to the coolant level and check for any sign of cylinder head problems. Last week I was sitting in traffic when I noticed smoke drifting past the front of the car, on pulling away it let out a cloud of smoke which cleared under acceleration but continued when I pulled over to investigate.

Took about a litre to top it up, I continued home, about 8 miles with the smoke getting worse, when I

arrived being as it was late,I decided to leave another look till the morning.

Took about another litre to top up, but when I started it up cold, there was no smoke, however as it warmed up the smoke came back, so I suspect it is a cracked head. I shall try some snake oil in the coolant and will report back in due course.

I've had two MK1 lwbv6 shoguns and a mk2 lwb diesel job.

I came very near to buying a mint V6 mk1 lwb about 3 years ago, it was fantastic with low miles. The Mk1s are my particular favourite although most are now used as LPG launching platforms by the Taliban

The 2.6 petrol on the Starion and the Pajero used to crack heads. Any engine damage isn't a problem, they look stupidly easy to work on.

There's a mk1 SWB in the local scrappy if I need anything.

The 2.5 can crack heads if worked hard - they don't like to rev particularly (past 3500). Usually crack by pre-combustion chambers. Check cambelts - hardly anyone changes the balancer shaft belt, or gets it wrong so the engine tries to shake itself to bits. Check valve clearance when stonking hot - smidgin on the looser side tends to help a bit. Early boxes can cook input shaft bearings - relatively easy to change...lol. Later boxes can be baulky into 2nd when cold. Add Mitsubishi Frictionâ„¢ additive...:-)

Don't have the logbook at hand, I bought it about half a mile away from me, the previous owner had it about 3 years. I'll have a look when I find the docs.

My L300 Delica is a 2.5 TD Auto - it's painfully slow. You can end up driving everywhere at full throttle, which doesn't help the fuel consumption.

  • Another vote here for V6 3.0 petrol Paj. Quiet, nippy, reliable, cheap and....wait for it...approx the same MPG as the diesels (in my experience anyway).  Petrol models are also usually very high-spec.

Diesel Pajs vibrate so much that sitting is traffic is uncomfortable (why does no one else ever complain about that?).  Other petrol 4x4s are too thirsty. I ran a V6 Paj and a V8 Disco at the same time and the Disco drank twice the petrol.

Here's a plan. Buy a solid but overheating V6 3.0 Paj for scrap money. Establish that it's corroded pipes and not HGF causing the overheat. Pay a workshop about £500 for an overhaul (water pump, belts, hoses, pipes etc) and bingo you should be left with a machine good for 50K. Plan worked for me last year. Intended on taking it on a mega road trip but sold it on just last month. Bet it is still running in 15 yrs.

And here's one I owned earlier (because you like pics)

Never owned one but driven a few, agree with above, the diesels are no joy but then 4x4's aren't my thing anyway.

Occurred to me reading this how few of these you now see. There used to be bloody loads of them, esp. the Pajero (most grey import/JDM) up to a few years ago but now they are almost non-existant round here.

I'm going back about 6/7 years at least. Dave and Scott shogun repairs in Alfreton. Looks a lot like scouts old shogun.
