Quick question regarding tax/insurance

Just wanted to check I'm right that a car has to be put on sorn if there's no insurance on it?  Thanks for any answers.

To tax a car, it needs to be insured so one would assume so.

Yes it does need sorn in place, and to be honest I don't think you need insurance to tax anymore.

You must have motor insurance for your vehicle if you use it on roads and in public places.

You do not need to insure your vehicle if it is kept off the road and declared as off the road (SORN). This rule is called ‘continuous insurance enforcement’.

It suggests, but doesn't specifically say, that you're either SORN or insured. It does say categorically if you are SORN then you don't need insurance, but doesn't say the other way around - only that if it's kept in a public place it needs insurance.

From that, not clear what the state of play is if it's not SORN, but is tucked away in an underground lair or something.

A car with no insurance needs to be Sorn'ed but a car that is SORNed is allowed to be insured.

If a car is Sorned it needs to be off the pubic highway, and occasionally this can cause issues, like if you have a residents car park, which looks like a road. (Bloke around the corner from me, has a flat above some shops, and round the back is an open service area and car park, and he had his sorned car clamped, I assume because the powers that be thought this a public highway, when in fact it's an unadopted private road, and private car park)

Parking on a grass verge, next to your house might also be an issue.

You don't actually need insurance to tax a car on the new system.

Which is a bit strange.

The wording on the gov site is public place, not public road. I thought there was a bit of a commotion when it was introduced as private, but accessible carparks suddenly became fair game.

you need insurance to tax, but due to all the stuff, ins, mot, etc being avl to the post office via the database you technically don't need to take the paperwork.

you still need the relevant paperwork to exist.

I taxed the Mercedes before I insured it, and the previous owner didn't have it insured as it was off road and on Sorn.
