Current owner info from DVLA

I know they used to do this but does anyone know if the DVLA will still give you a vehicles current owner's details?

Mate wants to see if he can buy back a scooter he bought brand new and it has sentimental value.

I know you had to give good reason and it was £15 or so.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here you go.

You have to give what they consider to be reasonable cause, wanting to buy a vehicle doesn't count unfortunately.

You could chance your arm and fill in the form stating the vehicle hit you in a car park or something, but that might be considered a bit fraudy.

Nice one.

Not questionning one's knowledge but how do you know 'wanting to buy' isn't good reason?

I applied stating I wanted to buy the reg number and was refused aa not reasonable, so I would imagine that buying the whole'car would be similarly refused.

^^^Only to be expected, really..HOWEVER, I know people who have had unsolicited offers from plate-monkey dealers offering to buy so can only presume they  LIED to get the information.    There is a plate out there that I would like to buy but have already been rejected at DVLA level, too...

It says they consider each case individually, they do have an obligation as data controllers not to hand out info freely, unless it's to private parking companies of course.

There was a thread on ph where someone said they had bought a number plate by getting the info from the dvla. No suggestion of exactly what they put in the form though, so they may well have lied.

I suspect it's down to the quality of your story and how the dvla monkey is feeling on the day.

I tried to trace the owner of an abandoned Proton earlier this year, using a V888, with a view to purchasing it.

Got my cheque sent back and a letter expressing they'd not put me in touch with the owner.

Bit of a gutter but, nothing ventured and all that..

Good luck for your mate.

Sod honesty, just lie through your teeth and tell them what they want to hear and get the info off them.

To get registered keeper info after an accident you would have to be a solicitor or insurance company, as I understand it. (This is a good thing, as it hinders people going round with baseball bats in a psycho version of 'knock for knock').

I successfully traced the then owner of my Dedra with a V888 on the basis that it had been abandoned on private land.  (It wasn't my land, but was in a barn a friend was renting.)  Just sayin', like.
