Cars you didn't know existed until very recently.

I've had two QXs.  The 3-litre version is a bit of a Q car - pretty much invisible but goes like a bat out of hell.

Yeah, this.

Xedos* was the posh brand, and it proved it by bombing.

I do know Eunos because they seem to be more Eunosssesss on eBay than UK MX5s. I guess they were all imported during the huge grey market blast when people realised Japan drove on the correct side of the road, and had funny little cars.

Within 5 miles of my home in the mid to late 90s there were three massive sales pitches devoted to Bongo Friendees, FTOs, Eunos Roadsters, Delicas, Pajeros.....

* Can we not have fifteen pages on how to pronounce it this time? ;-)

Not to mention there was a waiting list for the Mk1 when it was new. I never knew that until I read about it last year.

I thought Hyundai were doing a pretty good job of rising through the ranks and being thought of as mainstream. Not bad for where they were at. Wouldn't be long until they do a Skoda and become premium.

Not sure they needed a new brand, and surely they've seen how Infiniti and Lexus failed to take off.

Infiniti and Lexus are huge in the states and genesis sell a bit here too as well as the big Kia genesis clone k9000 or whatever it is called this week. Are they launching genesis in the Uk then? As you say might be a tough sell.

These brands come and go, Toyota just killed scion a few months ago.

Skoda has become premium? Why has no one told the designers yet?

Nissan QX, never heard of them until I followed one yesterday. Trying to capture the same slice of the UK market taken by the Toyota Camry...

Had a JDM one of these, was a Cefiro, aka Maxima. Available as 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 all v6. Very nice motor !

Ha! You've gotta admit they're a world away from the Favorit now, maybe they're not the lovable underdog any more but they're doing a damn sight better at getting cars on driveways.

Sorry but give me an Estelle any day. They used to be cheap but different and worked well. Not they are just a shite VW but cost more than some other cars which are technically and build quality wise superior.

But I am probably in the minority as you are right that seem to be selling the tat very well.

You probably don't get these in UK.

Nissan Cima. Real Nissan prestige and 4.5L V8

The $12990 price is now reduced to $8750 !

A GTi driven by rubber band.

Care to explain that?  What does "rubber band" mean - timing belt?  CVT?  Or are the rear wheels actually driven by belt drive?

I'm guessing front wheels driven from cement mixer engine via a belt and 'variator' pulleys, moped stylee.

The Genesis, Hyundai's new luxury brand along the lines of Lexus and Infiniti. Looks like an Audi grille and Merc headlights and prices start from almost 50 grand!

Hyundai Genesis brand new: £50,000

Hyundai Genesis with 50 miles: £30,000

OUCH! That's some serious depreciation that makes the MG6 seem like it holds its value well. Hyundai may be on the up but the world still isn't ready for a 50 grand Hyundai luxobarge just yet. Still, in a few years we'll be able to pick one up for 10p and wallow in luxury.

Do we have a Crosback? I hope not.

I was behind a UK registered one last week, time to sit in the corner rocking backwards and forwards.

I see they are on sale in the UK. At 23000 for the poorly regarded 2.0 diesel surely you've spotted the only one...

Oh yes, of course.

I know nothing about marketing (as will become obvious shortly) but it seems that whilst luxury brands can move downwards into the (relatively) cheaper medium and small car sectors

and still have a premium priced product (e.g. BMW 1 series / Mercedes A class) cheaper brands such as Nissan and Toyota cannot go the other way without having a totally separate identity and even then there is no guarantee that it will be successful however good it is because it is not a Mercedes or a BMW.

Have these been mentioned yet?

WOULD ACCEPED ONE IN APRT XSHANGE PLIZ.

Mitsubishi Debonair - they made these things right up until 1986, and as far as I can tell, barely changed them throughout its lifetime.

I also know nothing about marketing but in internet style have decided to comment anyway.

I reckon it depends on markets - I noticed in the USA that it doesn't appear to take a lot create a separate "brand" which is just badge engineering.

I suspect this may be due to the proportion of drivers there who neither know nor care about what's under the bonnet/hood or where it came from is even higher there than here.

Examples -

Ford/Lincoln/Mercury

Honda/Integra

Chrysler/Eagle
