Project 'OutRun' Mk1.5 MR2 Turbo 31/10 Fuck off!

Worth saving with 230, soon to be 300 bhp.

I dunno if I would care, had it a 4AGE.

I leave mine open to a lot of criticism, as I have it back to the bare bones, underseal off, for all the world to see.

Most will be like this imo, it is due to the construction of the car, but how many are known and have the problems sorted?

It just depends how far you need to go, to satisfy yourself that you have a 'good' car.

I would rather deal with it now, than let it fester beneath plastic body kit and underseal.

Boot is good,as is rear valance/upper panel, screen surround and t-bar seal channels etc. Dash is out and everything else.

Only the column, rack, servo, pedal box etc and engine, remain atm.

You planning to attack yours with the knot and flap wheels?

I have no idea why they rust, the sill covers do it no favours as the Mk1a don't rust as badly on the sills. It must be down to quality of metal again, as have you seen some of those bumper reinforcing bars go, it looks like a paper doily. I had one that had new bumper bars and mounting brackets everywhere but sold it to a breaker, I really wish I'd stripped it and kept the parts as I planned on getting another eventually.

I think I'll start on it as soon as the Starion is on the road, I only have four cars left now (with one more to go).

RESPEK on getting it done so quick though, it should be done by next year!

It's all thin gauge pressings, sandwiched together.

Great for building, but a nightmare for trapping rust between the seams.

There's loads of parts of them that could have been made with a single pressing, but is 4+ separate panels.

That is just asking for trouble. Maybe they designed them not to last?

The bumper bars appear to let water in, around the light holes where they have an additional skin, stitch welded to the front and no seam sealer.

With the time/money/new panels going into this, it better last for a while!

Cheers for the vote of confidence. ASAFP is the plan for this one - but no bodging.

Fair play for having a fleet. I have two cars and one is my reliable daily modern and today is the first time in about three weeks, that I have found time to wash the thing.

I think 'the unpleasantness' on these cars is down to shonky, or at best variable, painting and undersealing. They seem to go in entirely random places, no rhyme or reason. This suggests to me that the folks in the factory either didn't really give a shit, or (which I think more likely, having worked for a Japanese giant) didn't have enough time to do the job with the necessary diligence/care/uniformity.

I thought Japanese folk tend to be smaller?

Go to sleep, you've got wire brushing to do before nimminz and I join you tomorrow.

Haha. You mean work. :(

There's not much left to wire brush. :D

We had a couple of hours on it tonight, so more of the same.

Bit of tidying up and more totally pro panel beating, with 100% correct tools, honest.

That saw the two massive frunk patches fitting grand and attached to the chassis legs, so John seam welded them and a few other areas that needed finishing up.

Guess who?

I cut a couple more holes - cos this car doesn't have enough - and made some patches. Waiting for the Etchweld to dry, before they can be let in.

I am thinking of mashed potato, again. Lalalala-la...

Temporarily protected (as with all areas, so far), until we dress the welds back.

Not a great deal to see, but it is heading in the right direction.

More, tomorrow.

What is that pink pipe thing?

My penis.

Or you may be referring to one of the charge cooler pipes.

Yeah we still have a ribena-filled chargecooler pipe which is determined to photobomb all the welding shots. Love the mid-weld photo like!

Did this have a turbo engine in when you got it then?

Aye. Was already a '1.5'.

Oh, i see this is on here too. Hello from TB (Tommytank)

Hello, mate!

I was working late on Tuesday, so we never touched the car.

Tonight, we got the remaining frunk floor patches in.

John did the large one on his own - as well as the usual welding - and it turned out great, thanks to forming a bulge in it, that follows the original panel pressing.

The other patch (as well as previous ones) follow the same trend.

Even though they aren't in an important, cosmetic area, we think it's worth doing as good a job as we can.

Shame the welder is acting up, on occasion.

We will be dressing all of the welds back, anyway.

Trimmed the lower edges of the large frunk floor patches, to tidy them up.

They will be welded up and seam sealered.

We are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, as the frunk section is 90% complete.

Hopefully the other repairs will be straight forward.

I will be working on the car tomorrow night and all weekend, so I hope for some good progress.

Awesome work men. Keep inserting coins and pressing start button.

Unlimited continues.

Well...this thing is now dead.

Up until last week, we were still plugging away at it, but it just kept getting worse.

The reason I stopped updating the thread is cos the thing was starting to look like a family quilt.

This was not the car I was wanting to plough a few grand into.

The inner sills were non-existent, same goes for the entire lower rear quarter. Plus the damn thing was full of filler.

I only discovered this at the start of the week. It had had arch and sill return repairs in the past, tack welded on over the original rotten steel and then covered with a thick layer of bodge. More wag than a weekend at Crufts.

Add in knackered inner sills and floor pans worse than they first looked, along with the rear valance, plus the conversion wasn't as good as I assumed/hoped for, that meant the thing was only fit for frag.

It's like it was inventing new problems, every day.

So I picked it clean and sent it on it's way on Wednesday.

I have pics of the horror show and the shell leaving, but it seems the bandwidth is maxed out on my Photobucket, atm.

I am going to be breaking it and buying a nice rev 3 turbo.

This car has put me off 80s stuff for a good while and I only owned it for about 5 weeks!

This makes me sad, but seeing the pics, it was much worse than anyone could have suspected.

Now to try and claw back some money.

I am not overly optimistic!

This makes me sad, after the great start it's a real shame to hear that it is only good enough to become bean tins

Had I excavated the outer quarters, initially, then it wouldn't have had the work done to the front end, dude.

The repair panels I have were no way large enough to sort this.

It needed donor rear quarters.

Plus every-fuckinbastardthing-else.

No deal.
