You need one of those noid lights for checking the injector pulses. I've got one - if all goes to plan I'll pop it through your letterbox at midnight tomorrow!!!

Thats very good of you Mr B... But why midnight??

That's what time I'll be coming back through Stoke on Toast!! Might be tomorrow now actually.

It shouldn't have a factory immobiliser on a K plate so that's one less thing to check, The factory immobiliser didn't come out till a year later as I found out when I got a new key cut on my old K plate 2.3 Cabriolet.

But most earlier 80 Coupe and Cabriolet models have had those horrid aftermarket systems fitted as a lot of insurance company's wouldn't touch one without a bit of Thatcham paperwork, So more than a few have had their wiring looms butchered in the past.

Mine had evidence of having two systems due to lost paperwork on the 1st one, so keep a look out for the tell tale scotch locks..post-9282-0-37109700-1409553857_thumb.jpg

In other news, the new battery is indeed borked!

Tried charging it overnight and it sent my charger crackers and now that isn't working either.

Garages eh?

Posted

FFS! This is beyond a joke.

How is it doing that though. Shirley it just wouldn't hold charge if it was run down?

To be fair I'm using one of those electronic chargers so if the battery is mega flat then it doesnt like it. The charging gauge needle was flicking between 0 and 10 showing there was a big problem. I may stick the battery on the XM, jump start it and see if it recovers over a few journeys. I suspect it may be fecked though.

Every time I see this post up the top of the page im expecting to see " Its alive "

Dont disappoint me :-)

Well, I want to leave it a few months and sink lots of time and money into it or risk seriously annoying Hillmanimp.

Thinking about the battery today, it had charge in it when it was dropped off at IVC as the central locking worked. I remember thinking, 'oh, they have connected up the battery, must remember to disconnect that' as I had told Volksworks more than once that the shitty TOAD alarm ran it down really quickly.

However I forgot in all the excitement of moving it and it must have sat there for a few days running down.

It is a brand spanking new battery though so will dig out the receipt and send it on. Will there be any kind of get outs on the guarantee about it being neglected by a bunch of clueless wankers at VW/Audi specialists?

UPDATE TIEM.

I managed to blag a couple of hours from family duties to have a play with this lovely Audi. Armed with a fully charged battery (the original was resurrected by using it for a few weeks on the XM) and a few tools I set to work checking out the V6 lump.

Naturally it was FUCKING freezing, sleeting down and generally horrible weather to be working in but I clocked a badly corroded earthing point on the rear of the engine. I unbolted it and scraped away as much of the green shite as I could with a screwdriver (what is that shit called?) stuck the bolt back in and looked for a spark when cranking.

There's now a spark from the two front coil packs feeding the front four cylinders, but the rear coil is annoyingly spark free. The spark is also a bit orange looking and I suspect a bit weedy. I'll get a wire brush out and copper grease and make sure the earth is deffo 100% and see what happens. I'm going to wait for some good weather though!

Unfortunately, despite now having 66.666% of the necessary sparks needed to run the engine wouldn't fire. There is fuel getting to the engine from the tank but all the plugs are dry so there doesn't seem to be anything coming from the injectors. Anybody got any ideas?

I feel that I've made some progress on this old Coupe, although it's still not running it;s always nice to get a motor that's sat for a while electrically live, test everything out, blow up the tyres and push it about a bit to keep the brakes free. Roll on sunny weather!

Cool, I'd like ALL TEH SENSORZ, aslong as it's a 2.6 V6.

Basically, it would be nice to have all the ignition components.

Ah knackers I could have dropped that 'noid light' into you to check the injectors with. Next time I'm up the unit I'll grab it and drop it in

will a 5 cyl TDI from a 100 fit ?

My wife had an 80 TDI that would not start until I shorted across the relay which is supposed to be triggered by the central locking module in the rear wing.

This was under 6" water which is probably why it wouldn't energise the relay.

No 5cyl 20v - all ignition stuff has gone - mainly body trim, doors etc left

Has it got the rubber bits that are at the back of the door just below the window line. The ones on this are letting water in. If they are in good nick they have got to ve worth buying.

Those little black triangles (x4) are never in good condition - they all deteriorate & crumble (been NLA now  for a long time)

Amazingly, it seems leak free now I refitted the fuse board cover.

..also a 5 cyl diesel would probably fit, but I've gone right off the diesel conversion at the moment.
