Down in the jungle.. an abandoned Amazon (plus a Volvo 480)

Hi all,

Just returned from a holiday down in Cornwall, near our holiday cottage in St Agnes I found an old Volvo Amazon estate parked in a garden, very overgrown and looking sorry for itself.

Keen to find out the story behind it I made enquiries at the address and after a couple of attempts eventually I knocked on when someone was at home. I always find it a bit nerve racking doing this, as you never know what response you're going to get. I suppose you could get chased down the road by a Doberman, but then you could get invited in for a steamy sex session by a sexy bored housewife.

The nice lady who answered the door didn't invite me in but did say that the previous occupier of the house owned the Amazon but had moved away around 10 years ago, apparently to the Birmingham area- the car was effectively abandoned. She gave me permission to explore the site and take photos. I got ripped to shreds on the brambles but that's all part of the fun I suppose.

PICS..

Vandals have broken the rear windows, slashed the interior but despite a fair amount of rot it looks very solid. I'm in love! I'd love to get my mitts on it as I've always wanted an Amazon, I had one about 10 years ago which caught fire and was broken up and have always missed it. I know this one is rough but it looks perfectly doable, plus it needs saving from the inevitable decline into dust and trip to the scrap recycling centre

But wait... what's that behind it?

A very rotten 480!

With some google researching I found the contact details of the owner, it's a guy in the Volvo Enthusiasts club and did indeed "abandon" it when he moved home to the Midlands several years ago. Unfortunately he won't answer his phone as he's pretty ill but will answer an email, although I sent one a few days ago he hasn't replied, until he does I'm at a bit of a brick wall.

The lady who occupies the house now says she's like to see the back of it and the site cleared, it is afterall, her garden she can't use because it's cluttered up with shite.

I'll keep this thread updated in case of any developments, but for now, it Amazon estate ownership for me looks like a bit of a holiday romance that stays on holiday.

I would have thought if he left it on her property and it has been there for a decade its hers to do with as she wishes. He may be the holder of the log book, but that's never equalled legal ownership.

Unless I have misunderstood and she is just renting the house from him/his relations.

Its a great holiday find though, and I hope you get your mitts on it somehow!

To be fair I didn't ask if she owned the house, she is probably renting, although not from the guy who owns the Volvo.

That would be an epic save.

Set of alloys from any early 740/760 there, too. Ill man did like his Volvos. Maybe a bit of emotional blackmail will help?

According to www.askthepolice.co.uk if the car is abandoned, you can leave a note on it for 14 days and if no-one has done anything (which would seem likely in this case!) you can have it removed.

Which isn't the same as taking it away to fix it of course.

Fantastic idea though - looks a really interesting car too.  I'd love to do something like this and just try and restore it so it works rather than be immaculate.  Good for you, hope you succeed.

Lol the ask the police thing doesn't mean that, it means if it is abandoned on your property or obstructing. You're meant to move it with the damaging it to the highway if taxed or off road if not. Then apply to the dvla for the keeps details to bill them.

But after this long and the state of them they would be considered the same as any other lost or abandoned stuff. When I worked there, the official advice from the police would have been just keep em and apply for a new v5 :-)

I reckon you could probably drive that home if you spent a couple of hours fixing it and maybe slept in the back once or twice. Please take pictures when you do.

Hey, where is Dugong? Has he hyperventilated and fallen off his chair or something?

Nice one on the persistent door knocking and investigative skillz. Hope it works out for you.
