Is EML an MOT fail?

Pretty much as title really.

I'm sorting out MrsN's CLK for MOT and the EML is on.

I know why,it's just scraped through the emissions for the last 3 tests and sometimes runs rich and uses loads of pez. Local Merc Independant who looked at it last year( and charges like a main dealer) reckons oil in loom, I've got one off ebay ,but more involved to change than I thought. Anyway tester who did Gaylander yesterday thinks a dose of cataclean will probably scrape it through.

So, do I need to fix* the light before I take it in. The vast expertise of the web doesn't seem sure, I'm hoping a real live mot tester can put me straight.

Wasn't it last year that a bunch of changes were made to the MoT re: warning lights, whereas before they were either ignored/not testable or you got an advisory only, now it's a fail point even if there's not a tangible issue.

Can't comment on the EML here as such.

Sounds like yet another ploy to get rid of older cars by making them uneconomical to fix and run.

If it has an EML, it's way too newfangled anyway.

So the new items for the pointless MoT test are:

Headlamp levelling and cleaning devices when fitted for HID or LED headlamps
Main beam ‘tell-tale’
Battery (including batteries for electric or hybrid vehicles)
Electrical wiring and connectors
Trailer electrical socket security and damage
Operation of 13-pin trailer electrical sockets using an approved trailer socket tester
Operation of the steering lock (where fitted) including that malfunction warning is not displayed for an electronic steering lock
Electronic power steering malfunction warning indicating a fault
Electronic parking brake control and malfunction indicator lamp
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) components, including the switch (if fitted) and malfunction warning
Brake fluid warning lamp illuminated or inoperative
Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS)
SRS components including airbags, seat belt pre-tensioners, seat belt load limiters and SRS malfunction warning lamp
Engine mountings
Speedometer
Indirect vision devices (where they replace obligatory mirrors)

So no, the EML is not an automatic PHAIL, but the car will still have to pass an emissions test.

What does it take to reset the silicone idiot, and if the EML comes back on, read out the fault code?

Fair point!

EML is ok I believe. I asked about it when my test was due and resident testers said it wasn't a fail, although I cleared it before I put the car in anyway.

"EML is not a fail, as long as the car is otherwise OK, emissions, that sort of thing. Airbag light is a different story."

Civil Servant @ Larne MOT Centre, to me, in January.

There are going to be some new-fangled specialists cropping up, I reckon, dedicated to doing nothing more than extinguishing dashboard lights. The thought of bridging a rot-free, mechanically perfect car because a warning lamp is on just about sums up the way Europe is headed. There seems to be no joined-up thinking at any level, whether by prodding the sleeping Russian Bear with a cattle prod in attempting to entice Ukraine into NATO or the, "No, vote again Ireland/France/whoever, you gave the wrong result - we want your people to vote in favour of what we're trying to do".

As mentioned above, the EML being on is not a fail.If it is on due to an emissions issue then fixing that for the MOT might put the light out.SRS airbag is an advise if the light doesn't come on at all but a fail if flashes or stays on.The tyre pressure monitoring system is only applicable for cars registered 2012 onwards so doesn't come into it until next year. Those registered before that date are pass and advise.

Stability systems, including the switch?

Are hire firms still in the habit of disabling the stability control inhibit switch?

Already quite a few round here...

No doubt they're appearing up here too, I just don't need them! MoT man now sends any electrical problem to the local auto electrician though. He reckons it saves him money, which I can quite believe.
