So just boarding the 1245 service. 2 hours of milk train shite follow as the train plods down to Middlesborough stopping at a veritable smorgasbord of North Eastern towns! Southern shandy drinking toga lifters tend to not appreciate the size of the island up here. Middlesbrough is a whopping 60 miles from Hexham. I always thought it was about 30 miles away.

The train in question is one of god Northern rail buses on rails.

Well. I got to Middlesborough by 3 and was collected by Paul, the seller and a top chap who is relatively new to the world of chod.

The car itself was down near Stokesley a good 10 miles south of Middlesbrough.

The usual story with one of these 244s giffer owned thd old boy had got too old to drive and sold it to Paul 6 months ago. Been garaged most of its life and it's in very honest condition thd o ly issues being slight crusting on the wing bottoms the steelies need painted. It's missing an outer chrome wheel trim ring and the drivers wing mirror needs tightened.

A few bits of bodywork to tart ip and the paint on the top if the port side wing needs cutting as it's oxidised. It looks like it hasn't been done before.

Internally the usual indestructible 240 more due to the low spec. The only issue is the arse of the drivers seat is worn . Never seen this before o a volvo the cloth is usually ad tough as everything else.

Mechanically. Points and condenser on this one with a carb. It's running lean thanks to the mot tester and needs a tune as it is cutting out when cold on the idle choke or not.

On the road the manners are typical forgiving and very easy yo drive. The 2.1 B21 red block engine is sprightly enough. All bushes and springs are as tight as you'd like and thd steering is rock solid. The only issue is it needs a bit of a tune. Other than that I would not hesitate to drive this car to Stockholm and back tomorrow. 4 speed means it cruises comfortably at about 60 mph. Over 70 gets a bit noisey. It's a nice light place to be. I learned to drive in a 240 DL so I can't really give you any insights as it is thd base line from which all my other motoring has extended.

I've owned several 240s from different periods and thd earlier ones are definitely my preferred choice.

The 1982 European spec model was the first with the large rectangular lights but it still had the very 144 derived body despite the face lift. The most noticeable difference with later

Models is the flat hood line. Later models have a raised bonnet line with a plinth at the grill. These earlier ones have cleaner lines.

My father had a 1983 2.1 DL estate in blue. His was also a 4 speed and it went all over Europe with us.

All in all a very fine car. Nothing glam or sexy it's rather like a very well made Swiss watch ...It just does what it was built to do very reliably.

A top quality a class bit of uber chod and no mistake.

Upgrades. ..

Well I have a new old stock volvo radio LW MW no fm. But there is a rather spectacular late 80s clarion cassette player in situ. Many of the earlier 240s had the stereo mounted in the lower position behind the gear stick.

Other options. I might fit a set of GLT leather seats mainly because they are spectacular with leather buttons.

I'm going to try and source a replacement volvo emblem for the grill as it has seen better days.

I'm also Co side ring replacing the points and condenser with an electronic system. They are pretty good these days and it's always an idea to carry the points and condenser with you in case the ignition module fails.
