short term insurance?

It would be really useful if I could insure a mates car for two weeks and use it.

The car is currently on SORN but he will lend it to me and we will tax it for a month, then it gets exported.

Who are the cheapest companies for this?

Can I insure it given that it's not mine?

Can you not just add it to an existing policy for a short period?

I know many policies will allow this kind of thing.

Can you use the cooling off period to cancel the policy after 14 days and just get charged admin? I did this once with Direct Line.

There is an insuance company that offers short term car insurance, I remember it being advertised on the radio not too long back. Unfortunately, I cannot remember who they were. I need to find out myself as I'm looking to get the 827 Coupe insured for a short while.

I used short term insurance the other day to pick up the beetle and the the weird thing was the comparison websites came up dearer than actually just going direct to an insurance company.

The cheapest I could get the insurance for was £28 but I went through the RAC and got it for £18, so it may be worth giving them a try...

Last January I used these guys to insure my old car for 2 days so that I could tax it / sell it.

They were the cheapest at the time, but that might have changed, so worth shopping around.

I use short term insurance and pre-booked MOT when buying/moving/breaking down. There's a couple of comparason* sites for them but I don't have my laptop etc.....  The quotes always seem a bit random and some have an exclusion about the vehicle being SORNed.

I have just used insure2drive anual policy on a PUG 106 and cancelled it, they charge   1 month 20%   2 month 28%   3 month 36%    plus 25

pound.

*5/10 Spelling, must try harder.

Ive used the rac short term policy to cover me to get cars home in the past. Was about £22 for a day. gets cheaper if you take it for longer but theyll be after probably £150 for a fortnight so not worthwhile.

Either take out a years policy and cancel within 14 days cooling off period so you just pay the admin fee, or get your mate to leave his policy live for the month and drive it using the "driving other cars that dont belong to me" extension on your current insurance if you have it.

Be aware a lot of short term insurance certificates have a specific exclusion of not being used to tax a car. The last two companies I've used.... Dayinsure and RAC I think..... both said this on the certificate. It'll also take 14 days to appear on MID so most short term companies won't bother, which makes it more difficult at a post office

^ that's interesting, and must be a new(ish) development. I've used Dayinsure in the past specifically for this, eg to collect my XJ6, tax it and drive it to storage. They used to update MID overnight IIRC.

Quote came in at £28 per day or £230 for a V6 Freelander.

Stupid thing is that I am insured to drive it on my own insurance anyway.  It is this silly continuous insurance rule that's the problem.

What would actually be the outcome if I was caught driving with my insurance and MOT but no insurance on the vehicle nor tax?

Driving with no insurance is 6 points but is this^^ the same?

Depends what your insurance says. The Driving other cars extension almost always states in the small print that the car MUST be covered by someone else on another policy in order for you to be insured. In which case = driving with no insurance = 6 points
