martc Posted March 14, 2023 Posted March 14, 2023 Grey St, NuT. During a thunderstorm on 25th July 1941, the head of the statue of Earl Charles Grey was knocked off by a bolt of lightning and fell onto the tram lines below the monument. In 1947, sculptor Roger Hedley created a new head based on the preserved fragments of the original. Perhaps the Royal Turks Head Hotel could have supplied the replacement? And then, in 1977, they had to pack piles under it to support it due to the massive moles digging the Metro tubes below it. uk_senator, Andrew353w, lesapandre and 4 others 7
