Is this an Austrian border? A while ago Junkman regaled us with the interesting fact that many Austrian states/provinces (not all) drove on the left before WW2.

 

I guess this picture is one of these borders (either with Germany, or an internal one), being multilingual I'm going for an international border.

 

(It's the picture of a VW on a snowy road with the sign 'Links Fahre(n)' across the road)

martc, Junkman is perhaps most likely to answer your question. I don't know where exactly the picture was taken but your informed guess probably isn't far off. It's definitely not North Yorkshire.
