Buying cars you really don't need.

Citroen C4. It does all the mundane crap a daily car does, in all weathers. Plus it has a working heater and stuff. It takes the strain that would knacker the Amazon and destroy the Charade. 'Need' in the first world sense of the word, or something like it - perhaps a brand new Golf at £350 or a car given to me by a true enthusiast.

Amazon. Do not need. Want it to work. Infuriating.

460 Turbo. Like the C4, but faster and worse. Merely old. Needs about £300 spending on it to get it back on the road. Could tan the credit card and get it done, but that's not a sensible move at the moment. WTC wants to buy it for 10p, but he can FRO.

Charade. Surprisingly perky but crap at hills and in worringly good condition. Would be made worthless if pressed into everyday service. Will keep, but do not need.

Piazza. Has no front end and is very dead. Costing a fortune in storage. Do not need.

Its never a question of 'needing'. Its 'I want' and 'im having that and I dont care what anyone else says' are the only relavent points surely? If not then ive been doing things very wrong for years.

I dont need any cars as I have use of a company van, doesnt stop me having 3 old cars and 1 old van though!

Thinking about it I've got the following:

FIAT Cinquecento: My daughter is struggling a bit with the non-power assisted steering so that'll be up for sale soon.

So really sort of 2 out 6 are 'needed' and one of those has been off the road for about 3 months!

Steering on these gets really tight with age- mine did.. the inner ball joints on the rack die. New (well, 10k miles) the steering was light enough to spin with two fingers at a standstill.

When I was a kid with a paper round there was an old bloke with an amazing driveway.   Nearest the house was a spectacularly mille-feuille Cowley, next was an 1100 practically on its belly followed by a later billy-blundered which was sinking slightly more  slowly into the crumbling asphalt.  Lastly, and sticking right out over the pavement was his current daily - a very early Marina coupe that looked like it had just failed its first MOT and wore all of  the corroded and hand-painted giffer trinkets that had left evidence of their previous life  on the other 3 Morrises.   Crusty roofrack, leprous foglamps and dingy car club badges etc.   There was a garage too, which probably contained the skeletal dust of a pre-war Ten or something.   I really wanted  to be like  him and its nearly working.....

Somerset - Need. It's my current daily.

A35 - Need, as a backup for when the Somerset breaks.

Cambridge - Don't need, massively broken and no time to fix it.

Atlantic - Don't need, but had to buy because it's an Atlantic and I'd always wanted one.

Maestro - Don't need, bought back off Gary Cox as its future was uncertain. Now back on the road and used as a runabout by my dad.

Im in the lucky situation that I have trade insurance , trade plates etc as well as storage facilities . However I am trying to run/ establish a garage business so I am trying my best to keep the site clear and tidy.

My gold Saab is pulling the place down a little if im honest so once SF has gone its going to be made into bean tins.

I see so many old shitters that I would like to buy/try but cant bring myself to do it.

Having just sacked off my old Discovery to Avenger 4x4 I ought to get rid the 306 as it's been broken for far too long.

Even though I've driven less than 100 miles in it this year the Series 2a is needed just because.....

The replacement Discovery is the all rounder that the old Discovery was so I need that.

Haven't bought any chod for a while but as I'm setting up an MOT station all my cash is being swallowed by that.

Friends have suggested I get a Berlingo van and have it sign written but I'm thinking along the lines of a HA or Marina van.

Or better still how about a maestro van. I might know where to find one !

Most of my cars are in the "don't really need" category.

Out here I have two Jeeps (one of which I use for offroading and then other of which I never drive), a family Grand Voyager which I love and a modern S-type that I can't stand the sight off and am too apathetic to sell (so it's on loan to a mate).

Being the twat that I am, I am now contemplating a third jeep and/or an old-ish Mustang.  Or a Discovery 2.  Or a Corvette. Or importing a LHD MGB.  Or something equally stupid.

Then back in the UK there's my MGC GT that I've had for 25 years and a Saab 900ng convertible that I REALLY don't know what to do with!

I'm about to buy another car on Sunday,  I need it to take the kids to school while I fix the Discovery.

I don't need any of the others but Ms C likes them so they are staying,  as I only have off road parking for two I've had to tow the camper up to the local pub's carpark.  'How much do you want to leave it here a couple of months Al?'  'Dunno, nowt really, come drinking more and stick summut in the charity box'.  :D

I have a TR7 which I have not driven for over two years plus an A35 that I rarely drive; I bought it back two years ago just because I had owned it (twice) before. My daily driver is a  modern Suzuki Alto which does most of what I need at 60mpg, in relative comfort, which is why in the last few minutes I have just agreed to buy another Volvo 240 estate. I'm sure I will find some use for it, even if it's just to stop it going to Scotland. (It's about time they left some for the rest of us)
