When I last heard that story it was an Alfa.

He definitely had a Beta. V plate.

V regs ones always exploded.  W reg are the minties.

It was only series 1 betas that had the rusty subframe issues.

Lancia definately did have problems with rust though. One of my dad's friends had a Gamma Coupe. Thinking back, I'd guess it would have been new in about 1980, so probably on a 'W' plate.

It was a glorious looking car and I loved it. The damn thing failed its first MOT on structural rust. My dad's friend was horrified!

That Jensen convertible is fab!

Reading through this thread, I had forgotten how much I like these old Lancias. They look so delicate and pretty.

Yes, there was a rust problem, especially in series 1 Berlinas, which had bulkheads unusually prone to rust, but, as the Junkmeister reminds us, all cars from the seventies rusted , except those that were plastic and/or galvanised.

Series 1 Betas are almost all gone.  Later ones seem from my experience be as rusty or non rusty as any car of their era.

The Coupes do have a smallness and delicacy about them, although Fulvias are even more dainty.  I missed the bus on Fulvias, as they are now well spenner.

Meanwhile, I hear that skizzer of this parish has a confession to make on the subject of Lancia Beta variants.  Ahem.

+1 with merc , ive seen 5 year old e classes fail on subframe rust.

Either way BV72 you have a survivor and I love it

Having owned a Lancia and done some research on it (i.e. listened to Volksy as he told me), it was not the subframe that was the problem, it was the body mounts that the subframe attached to. These could rot and the engine would try and pull itself away from the rest of the car, subframe and all.

Here is a new vs old mount shot on mine:

Obviously the rest of the car could rot too but these are a moisture trap and rotted faster. This combined with bad steel is bad news as they really are quite important and an absolute fucker to sort out.

Also, 10 miles down the road, pleasant blokes in a shed who fix old Italian cars.  Fookern A.

The Fulvia is exquisite, but there is a clear visible linage from them to the Beta, at least to my eyes. I like them, especially the HPE – a car I absolutely loved as a kid.

Pretty much everything seemed to rust until quite recently. My Jag (a ‘70s design mind) made in 1992, turned out to be a talented ruster.

Mercedes always seemed to rust quite a bit. I remember the W116s driving about when I was growing up always seemed to be seriously rotten with rust bubbling up everywhere, but especially on the rear wings. The W126 seems to have quite a few problems too.

It always amuses me how posters on Piston Heads make the Mercedes W124 out to be the world's best quality car ever made and problem free in every way. “Bombproofâ€Â, they say, then list page after page of work they have needed to do on the body and suspension. The same number of problems on a Jag or a Lancia would have them condemning the car as rubbish quality, I’m sure. It’s all about perception, I guess.

Still, even if I’m wrong, when a car is as pretty and charming as a ‘Seventies Lancia, you can forgive it virtually anything.

I had a really good look at the Beta I've got yesterday. I pulled it off a scrap wagon 18 months ago and have tracked down and recovered all the bits that had been stripped etc. It's only done 31k and needs 5 he following:

The bits re fitted:

Bonnet, boot; lights, grill, carpets, boot lining, back seat, steering wheel.

Welding: off side rear turret and sub frame and inner arch.

Suspension..front bushes replaced and ball joints and track rods. This is an edinburgh car and thus the shit toads have taken their toll..This is why I like hydropneumatic citroens.

Brakes

Clutch

Cooling system needs a flush put and rubber pipework replaced.

That's it.

So I've decided to keep it and take it down to hexham for sorting out.

I'll tackle it. My mechanical ability has come on heaps since the days of Yugo alternators!

Do you know of a good independent mechanic there should I need one?

Upgraded to the Series 2 Grille used on the larger engined cars, as the standard one is dullsville, I reckon.

Fixed clattery hubcap mountings by using gooey gummy tape.

Mobile spottages today in London - 1974 P6 V8, luvverley, Citroen Traction Ant, luvverley including rusty rear bumper.

Found new steering rack via Betaboyz Forum.  Whoo knws how spifftastic this car may be when it can actually be steered?

Latest Lanca Nooooze.   The car is now blue with dayglo green highlights as tree sap and debris plus rain and polish have produced this fine effect.

New steering rack located in Eire for cheap money.

I just found more pictures from SF14 that I don't remember taking. I think I went a bit macro-maniacal.

I heart da YAJster, she so purrty.

The Koop of Krap roars and rorts once more!

Shown below is what happened to the water pump pulley wheel on the M40 the other week. Fooka dook, it exploded!    There was a right crash bang wallop when it happened, and I had to limp home minus water pump and alternator.  New pulley wheel fitted today, along with new alternator/water pump belt, and head gasket tested and found to be unborked.   Compression good on all cylinders.

Steering update:  great improvement thanks to fitting of new bearing at column base.  It's not yet 100%, as there is a suspected collapsed bearing inside the rack, but that's a bigger job. The steering no longer seems like it is about to lock at low speed, and is generally much better than it was at Shitefest.

The Handbrake is a bigger deal, as it needs a refurb of the calipers.  Roy will take them home and spiff them up after his next visit, but I want at least one working Lancia, so that can wait until Roy has located the wiring fault in my Volumex's fuel pump electrics .  Hill starts at present require frenzied footwork, but whatevs.

Grille update - I don't like the post facelift one after all, so back to eBay it goes.  I'm going to be un authentic and fit a Series 1 grille.  It's currently clearing customs after shippage from the US.

Derr, just remembered the car has a hand throttle - no frantic footwork required.

Grille thrills. Screw originality, I have fitted a Series One grille to the YAJster, because 70s.

First test of the YAJmobile in the wet.  Goes great!  Grippy trippy, doesn't flippy, leaky window, carpets drippy.
