Road Tax banding.

Earlier on I was lusting over an MG ZT v6 on eBay... On an 06 plate.

Because it's an 06 the road tax is a heart stopping £485 a year as opposed to almost half that had it been a few months older.

Thing is - with historic tax exemption it goes by year of manufacture - IE even if the car was register in April 73 you still get the exemption if you can prove it was built in 72.

Does this work with the newer tax bands or it it purely date of registration ? An MG ZT clearly would have been physically built at least a year earlier

Unfortunately for road tax, it is the date of registration that counts not the date of production.

Anything up to Summer 2001 will be on the old lump sum tax. After that, it will be on the OMGCO2KILLZUZ tax.

However, tax-wise, pre-2001 purchase only plays in your favour, if you cherish big waftbarges.

For those polar-bear-friendly, self-propelled recycling bins, the tax actually went down, de jure because of the environment, de facto because those fascists just wanted to increase the gap between you slave, and them, being chauffeured around in 2000hp helicopters and bomb-proof 5-litre and up chod. They thrive on your misery.

Besides, have I already mentioned, that everything designed after 1986 is total tosh anyway,

and should be avoided like a walking stick up the arse?

Sadly not - it's on date of first registration.

It's the 23rd March 2006 that the £485 rate came in, not the 1st so there's a handful of 06 plates, high emission cars that are on the old rate but by far the majority will be mega-pricey.

It's out me off a couple of cars ive looked at lately and will probably see a lot of nice bigger engined cars hit the bridge before their time .

It is my desire to have owned a Rover 75 4.6 V8 before I die.

Interestingly, it is classed to only emit 319 grams of CO2 per kilometre (that's not 318 or 320, you must know), hence the tax is a surprisingly reasonable £285.00 p/a, roughly 180 quid below the V6 model.

Whoever imputes any wrongdoing, is directly speaking against the ruling elite, and must therefore not be surprised, if he is prosecuted for activities against the holy war on terrorism.

How much did you say is a Gatling gun? What's the tax rate on it?

Every other v6 zt would be £285... Except this one since it was registered very very late - April 06. Three weeks too late it seems.

It's a bugger as it looks great and is fully loaded but £485 buys you a whole car, I'm not shelling that for tax.... Especially since come October you won't even get the disc in return.

The V8s look great, but still command strong money

Unfortunately, you are right. With less than 200 produced, it is unlikely any will ever reach shiter territory.

But they are the only car existent, for which I would succumb to the unthinkable, and sign a credit agreement.

build date (not registration date) IS relivant for historical tax, but as far as I can tell the CO2/emissions is whatever is on your V5 post 2001 and thats what the tax is set against. There have been a few cases I know of that newer connects have been accepted for a different banding after a few letters to the DVLA.

A little bit of gentle ringing in a LandRover/ Mini manner would be the answer for that '06 75.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of big engined cars suddenly getting older,as their values get closer to a years tax.

Amused me when a chap I knew had a Bentley Turbo R and a Focus 1.6 auto.

The Focus cost more to tax.

Minis and Land Rovers are ringed...rung?.....whatever...pretty often because it is simplicity to do it. Modern stuff is harder, with the VIN stamped in all manner of places, saved in the ECU memory, riveted behind the windcreen etc etc

As big modern cars drift down in value, they will reach a point 3 or 4 owners down the line where suddenly people dont want to pay the big tax bill, so they will hit rock bottom prices, being either broken for spares or scrapped. This can work in our favour though, as the purchase price will be low enough to justify the larger tax bill for a year or two, then sell it on.

I've been looking at humongous Mercs. Stuff like 02 plate S classes are dirt cheap, often mint, and because of the daft tax rules they're a little bit more expensive to tax than you'd expect.

My Focus is £154 for six months, which seems a bit excessive.

I have NEVA owned a car which requires this sort of scale nonsense

Flabbergasted to see that at £485 the MG isn't actually in the highest band! There us one above that at an eye watering £500 a year.

Christ. Even if you get an LPG Conversion all you get is a tenner off.

What grounds did the transits have to be reclassified Fred?
