would this be admitting liability?

I unfortunately touched a bellend's car.

He had taken 1 1/2 parking spaces and I was trying to get in the 1/2 that was left.

My front bumper touched has back bumper.

I was going so slowly that I'm amazed that he even felt it.  I was creeping forwards as slow as it is possible to go.

Anyway the guy went mental and wanted my phone number and took my reg.

There is a tiny mark on his rear bumper which will definitely just polish out. I don't even know if I did it but I suppose it's possible.

He was on about "it could have put it out of line" etc etc and I get the impression that he knows nothing about cars and is highly neurotic.

I asked him what he's going to do and I says he's going to get the car checked.

I am thinking I might just sent him a text offering to polish out the mark, which will take me two minutes and that will be the end of it.  I will also feel less stressed.

I don't want him to go to body shops or call his insurance.

Is offering to polish out a mark an admission of guilt?

Not if you say "I'm not admitting guilt, but I can polish the marks out regardless if you'd like."

There's a good chance you won't hear anything more about it tbh.

Tim's probably right.  However, did you take pics of the marks, and the position of Bellend's car?

Posted

No.

I didn't see the point as there was a mark.

There is a possibility that I will never hear from him, and another possibility that he will go to an accident management company and get his bumper resprayed and hire a car for a week.

I think "Without Prejudice, would you like me to get the mark removed from your bumper?"

To be fair if I did mark it I don't mind polishing it out.

I prefer TERMINATE WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE, but maybe that's just me. The problem would certainly go away...

Bloke sounds like a right drama rama, but 3 weeks ago a woman in a Bini reversed into my BMW, I know how annoying it is when someone is careless but it was just a small chip so she gave me £10 for touch up paint, which was £5 and is GR9 colour match, end of. Car has other small marks anyway, life goes on. He'll polish it out and calm down later...

You tried to park in a space you knew was too small, and hit another car, and the other motorist is a bellend?    Maybe you should try to claim whiplash or something.

PS:  the other bloke over reacted, but it sounds like there are bellend points available to share.

I didn't "hit" his car.  The bumpers touched at an extremely low speed.  Most people would consider that to be completely normal.

Also the space wasn't too small.  There was plenty of space for my car if he wasn't taking his and half of another one for no good reason.

How do I know that a space is too small without trying it?  Am I supposed to carry a tape measure around and measure it first?

There is something that isn't clear in my mind.  If rings his insurance company and says that someone has damaged his car what will happen next?

Can he just spend thousands and send me the bill without warning?

You should be awarded for knocking into anyone who takes up 1.5 car parking spaces. They deserve all they get as far as I'm concerned, the lazy, selfish twats.

If he rings his insurance and decides to claim then you will get a claim recorded against you.

Despite it being very, very minor, because your car hit his (and his was stationary at the time) then it would be judged to be your fault. That he wasn't parked correctly isn't relevant. Harsh maybe but thats life I'm afraid.

That said, would anyone with half an ounce of brains claim for that? I doubt it and wouldn't expect you to hear anymore of it.

which is why I think it would be best to offer to fix it for him

Do you always park by Braille, OP?  Call me a weirdo if you like, but I usually have a pretty good idea how long the car that I am driving is, and park it in spaces that look big enough for it.    I wouldn't get precious if someone nudged my car while it's parked, but I wouldn't think that it was somehow my fault if they did.

Or, in other words, the space was too small.  Top tip for future reference:  a clue to a space being too small is that there is already a car in it.     HTH.   If someone parks like a knob, that makes him a knob, but why join in the knobfest?

With that attitude, please let me know if you plan to be parking anywhere within fifty miles or so of  me, so I can move my car to a place of safety.   Anyway, if Mr Grumpy does yer for bazillions, now you can get the money back by suing me for pointing out that you are a solipsist.

I wonder if folks should sign some form to say that when they use the roads bellends will be encountered and some small touches should be accepted as inevitable?

Fnaaar!

Oooh - I think I found a use for this...

am I missing something about these plates?

It's turning into one of those threads

not if I take Breadvan72s comments on the chin and leave it that.

Hopefully this fellow will let me polish his bumper and won't claim.  Maybe he won't park so selfishly and I will not bump peoples bumpers.

TOUCH PARKING IS FUCKING ANNOYING

Back bumper blade on my stag is twisted because some knobend nudged it when parking. they unlike op didn't get caught doing it nor leave a note, they probably were not worried because they were only going .0000001 mph and its an old car what's the point etc etc

I had some kind individual split the rear bumper on my mundano as well and fucked off without so much of an explanation.

i am not daring to suggest that dnj makes a habit of this ;)

if "bellend" goes through insurance then bad luck i say. but if the shit fits, wear it!

I had a woman try to run me off the M6 with her pug 106, I was driving a 1982 Carlton estate. It was best for both of us for me to "pit" manuver her poxy french tin dish as I didnt want to become a "splat" on a fast approaching bridge. We both lived, exchanged details and I left the scene with a scuffed bumper. Never heard owt from her, as attempted murder carries a bit more than a slap on the wrist!

Just tell this bloke you'll polish it out, as it will go against BOTH your insurances if he decides to let M+M Vehicle repairs to "polish" it out for him.

Operative word:- BUMPER. Note. NOT decorative panel which must remain unblemished for the entire life of the car. He should try parking like a cunt in Paris. He would come back to something that resembled Father Ted's Rover.

if they are reasonable they they will accept your offer. if however they are a cunt then both of you lose out :(

find a bigger space next time, the world is full of cunts

Of course I would have pushed his heap out of the way. Scratched cars are a First World Problem. Some people are forced to walk 20 miles to get the nearest water. Which is rarely clean. (I always wondered why they didn't MOVE to a place nearer the best water........) You should both get over it and move on. Spend the money for polish on a water pump for an African Village. That way, every time you see the scratch, you think of happy smiling faces getting what they need!

Because lazy egotistical wankers in 'flash' cars that park like that will keep on doing so otherwise. This usually leads to everyone else moving a space along either side because some twat wants to park like an inconsiderate wanker. Then, when it's absolutely pissing down people have to walk further because of twats like this.

I like parking as close as possible in shit old cars and watching them struggle to get back in.

Rammed supermarket car park in Lichfield, a couple of weekends ago.  JDM_YO! 350Z taking 1.25 spaces.  Blingo fits just fine into the 0.75 left over, albeit quite close* to the barried Datsun.

Mouthy owner arrives and shoots his gob off, which doesn't help his case.  Invite him to climb over from the passenger side.  He demurs.  Calm resistance to his rhetoric pays off when he eventually uses the word 'please'.  Move Blingo to let him in.

It's a matter of education.

Had a situation this afternoon when parking at the local football club, some dick in his new BMW 6 series parked right in the middle of 2 bays i.e. everyone else squeeze up cos my car is so new and nice and worth ££££££. Well bollox I did squeeze in beside his car then noticed to my near side was a dirty Renna van, and this owner is bound to get back to his van before I get back to my car and fling is door open on my car, so I decided to move and found another space in the end to save my own paintwork and let dick with 6 series have his 2 parking bays i.e. Frustrating but at least no chance of paint chippage from Mr dirty Renna van.

I need some proper shite in my life again for these situations.
