Diesel needed

Recommended Posts

I've spent the last two years commuting long distance, and now I'm getting sick of putting petrol in.

I'm looking for a diesel for my next car - preferably French, estate and with a tow bar.

Ideally a 405 or Xantia. It doesn't matter too much as long as it's a diesel.

eg was looking at Astra estates, Omegas, BMW 325's.

I saw that one - at least it isn't around or close to Bristol/Taunton, which most of the cars are. I might give him a ring. I've gone through gumtree and ebay and that's the best I could find. :(

You would be hard pressed to find anything better, considering what you outlined in your initial post.

406 HDi gives staggering MPG and they are cheap as chips now.

or a Rover 75 / MG ZT dizzler. Not french but they are ace for the no money they are worth. Downside is you're talking a realistic 40-45 mpg whereas a 406 HDi will do 55 plus in my experience

What's the 405 mpg? I'd go for a 406, I liked them but the interiors are beyond grim,

Based on my experiences with BXs, non-turbo 1.9D averages 48mpg with a heavy foot, 54mpg on a gentle run. 1.9 turbos can top 50 a bit more easily, especially on a run, thanks to taller gearing. Think I once got 56mpg in my blown BX. The turbo lag is infuriating though. The 2.1TD (Xant and 406) is better, as the turbo seems to cut in earlier. HDis seem good too.

I had an X reg 406 HDI 90, After I had sorted all the usual 100,000 miles problems, ie- Belt Tensioner, Crankshaft Pulley and a Timing Belt.

It drove very well  50mpg was possible while actually driving it as opposed to pootling around.

They like to be driven to get the turbo spinning t make good MPG.

The one I had was GLX spec and everything worked, it was quiet, frugal, reliable and handled like a go cart.

It's still knocking around locally.

Decent diesel xantia seem to be a thing of the past.

And to think I sold mine for £400.

I would imagine the majority are clapped out / bodged rubbish by now.

If you could be bothered to keep ontop of those old Xantia TD's they were a wonderful car.

My N reg 1.9TD done 178,000.

I loved driving it too.

Unfortunatly there are no decent low milers left otherwise I would have another.

If you go for a 406 hdi then make sure it's a 90. More reliable and no dmf etc
