Lisa Riley Pt 2 - more camera fail

So, after my cheap, Chinese dash cam turned into a Pokemon somewhere between the Red State and my doorstep, I decided to explore other alternatives. Here's what I turned to.

It's a Mobius Action Camera with wide-angle lens. It shoots in delicious HD but is tiny. I paid £70 and it was quickly dispatched by a UK seller. For my £70, I got an in-car kit, with a cradle that allows it to use any standard, threaded tripod mount, a windscreen sucker thing and various cables.

You don't get a manual, but you can find one on the internet easily enough - now saved to my computer as a PDF. Here's some footage I shot of the Sirion this morning.

YouTube kindly buggers up the quality - I must find a better way of keeping it because what it shoots is very clear. It has a wide angle, which is why stuff is a bit curvy at the edges.

It's possible to change the settings to enable it to be used as a dashcam. It can be set to start recording as soon as it turns on or when detecting G-force, and also set to keep over-writing. It records as default in 10 minute chunks, with a slight overlap between.

More information than you could possibly ever want is presented by this jovial chap.

You can buy here. .Mobius (wide angle lens) - Car Camera Pack 2

Looks like quite good quality video. Is it worth the money in your eyes?

Good review. It seeems very handy and worthwhile to have, especially if you drive into Russia

I'd say it's well worth the money. I was looking at GoPros, but they're hideously expensive for what they are. I borrowed one, and wasn't overly impressed with it - certainly not at the price.

Helps if you're a bit geeky, as you can really muck about with the settings by getting it to pump out a config file, mucking about with it in a text editor, then getting it to read the new config. TechMoan has a new video where he shows you how to turn it into a super-discreet dashcam too.

(I've not watched this one yet)

My YouTube vid is a bit grainy. I've just used a different Codec which is hopefully more YouTube friendly. I'll be uploading that later, and MOAR vids will surely follow. May take the 2CV into town later to see if I can spot any ol' shite.

GoPro is expensive because it has its own battery and is wind proof, rain proof, shock proof and mong-proof. These are features that are not really required for a dash cam.

I used go pros last year doing marine research and shark counting. They are ace except when idiots drop them in strong currentS :)

£70 is too much I reckon, but I like the size of it - I'd have one in the front and one in the back, as I'm pretty sure non-fault accidents are mostly from behind.

I have to get one of these soon, as a VAG TDI/BMW320d blindly ploughing into me while he is making a call to the sales director on the M6 is about 50,000 miles overdue, even if it's just to capture his sunglasses fly off or gut collide with steering wheel in the collision.

I'm not planning on shooting any external footage. It's more than just a dash cam - it's a camera in its own right that can be used as a dash cam.

Shot more footage today, but our phone line has gone down so no internet! Not sure how long this'll take to get sorted.

Those KRAZY RUSSIAN WINTER 2014 dashcam compilations are scary, but the best one was where a pedestrian strolls out in front of the car (which had already stopped) takes a theatrical fall and then the driver got out the car and punchd f**k out of him for being a fraudulent twat.

Hopefully nothing like that will happen to you, but if it does, please make A-S your first port of posting such antics up!

Nothing that exciting here, but I do preview some of the Shitefest Cymru convoy route (up in the hills). Check out the sand-covered road near the sea after more high tides, and a last minute spot with great* camera work.

I'm really not having much luck. My new camera seems to have developed a fault. It no longer reads one of my memory cards at all, and keeps cutting out when recording on the other card. Ugh!

Hmm... are there any [haven't looked,cba..] utoobs with Geeks reusing 'sock drawer' old phones for 'camera work' like this...... wired/streaming to a device with sufficient memory in the glove box.

Just a Thort  :-P

That's a good idea actually sav, it wouldn't need an external memory just stick a big memory card in it. To be fair the only thing ruling out phone cameras is the sound as I've found car/road noise over powers the microphone
