Used to find a lot of coach operators had B10 Mxx plates on Volvo B10M coaches, likewise a lot had Xx VOL (Keenan's near here has A1 VOL, B3/4/5/10 VOL among others).

Then of course there was Weavaway in Newbury who put B10M plates on everything EXCEPT Volvo B10Ms for some odd reason. Round here Motts Travel has B10MMT (no prizes for guessing what it's on) and also had some other plates with Volvo model names but not on the appropriate vehicles - B6RMT was an Optare StarRider and B12MMT and B12TMT were Neoplan Skyliners. Vanity plate fail.

No mate, bought when they were valueless. Havent purchased a number in very many years. Sold a few, mind.

I don't like personalised plates on buses and coaches because it disguises the age of the vehicle. I would like to know if the coach is five years old or twenty-five years old. I know its irrational and I am quite happy driving around in an old car but that's just how I feel.

Best plate I saw was on a blacked out windows range rover with the number ORG 45M.

I kid you not.

Also saw 007 on a lovely old style 60's Rolls Royce with some old chap fast asleep in the back under a blanket. This was bombing along the M4 by Slough, was a few years back.

That's exactly the point, the passengers aren't supposed to know the age of the vehicle. An operator friend of mine told me that whenever he turned up to a multi-coach job they would always make a beeline for the one with the newest registration, even if the older one had just had a fortune spent on refurbishment and was in better condition, so that's why he would put cheap personalised plates on them. Age isn't everything in the coach industry and many operators would rather invest large sums in keeping their faithful and reliable old stagers up to scratch than trade them in for potentially troublesome newer vehicles that may be in worse condition.

Bloody hell, there's some toss number plates on this thread. Hardly worth having one if nobody notices.

Funnily enough, I was sort of talking about this subject with my Dad yesterday, when he mentioned a former work colleague who he used to car share with. She turned up in a new Ford Ka one day but it had the same registration plate (E reg I think - no idea if 6 or 7 digit) as her previous car. When he asked her, she told him that it was the registration of her first car and later revealed that she was dyslexic, so it was just something she could maintain in life to keep things a bit simpler for her. I'd never even thought of that but I suppose if you drive a modern car and chances are you may end up parked near an identical one, it could come in handy in this situation.

When I was a lad.........before plates were worth much my old man had DBF 7 on an A55 van....although plates were becoming valued this was considered shit and was called Daves's brother Fred.

Some old feller in the village gave us a Minor with the plate LEG 300 which me and a mate ragged around a field until dead. It was then weighed in. Haven't checked but I would imagine that would get bought back to life if not already.

My sis bought an Aggro with the plate TOW 2.......the seller kept the plate as it had been sold for £700 to a recovery firm

Years ago, a guy I knew bought a black Saab 99 Turbo and the reg from new was BSS666T

Ernie Wise had COM1C on his yellow Roller - used to see it when he visited his Mum a few doors away from where I grew up.

I do quite like the black Fiesta in Diss that has DI55XXX. Apparently my Grandfather had CF1 on a Lanchester, but as he always denied our existence, and has now shuffled off leaving his estate to the Queen, I'll never really find out.

It's remarkably easy to do; Bova Futura 'Classic's for example were more or less unchanged from 1980ish to 2013. Replace the front lower dash, tidy up the back end and a 50 quid paddy plate on your early 80s Futura and you're laughing. Van Hool's T8-series was more or less unchanged from about 1978 until 1998.

We don't really do cherry plates with the operator I work for, though GIB 6135 has been on a succession of vehicles since about 1996; it's currently on a 2013 VDL Futura 2.

I'm guilty of owning a few plates myself, but all are either relevant to me,or the car they are on. I actually have made all the cars appear older; yes it may appear a waste or money or vanity to some, but I don't smoke or drink so one number plate isn't even 6 months booze and fags for some people ! I can't see the point in spending thousands of pounds on a plate though

^that's the sort of plate I like....it would be such a crime to part them.

I am not into separating cars from their original number plates; only exception would be if the car was coming to the end of its life, and would then consider transferring the plate. Some classic car sellers wont sell the car if they suspect the buyer only wants it for the number,to then dispose of the car afterwards
