New car smell

My recent (1984) purchase smells of fungus (fungi?), damp and wee. Possibly the last owner was an incontinent botanist who slept in the car whilst on toadstool collecting missions.

I'm going to put a smell in your head- 100 Bonus shite points if you post a selfie of the face you pull whilst being taken back in time.

1970's Sprite Caravan.

My miniMetro smells of aged cheap BL plastics, and Paprika-coloured nylon seat fabric.  Stepping inside takes me back to 1982 and I love it.  The R8 416 on the other hand has much better build quality but only a whiff of Austin Roverness, if there is such a thing.

My Suzuki Alto only had the new car plastics smell for a few weeks, now it usually smells of damp spaniel, apart from this week where it also smells of pig-shit after an unfortunate site visit. Still it goes in for its first service next week so I'm sure they will give it a clean.

The A35 has the usual 1950's Austin smell, the TR7 smelled of cat's pee when I bought it, it took a while to get rid of that smell.

My Mercedes has a very distinctive, and quite strong, smell.

Puke.

90s Fords definitely had a distintive new-car smell which I always liked, the worst was my ex-employer's brand new 56-plate Berlingo which held on to a strong solventy glue smell inside for quite some time, it was nice to chose between that and the Astra which honked of stale diesel and mouldy damp carpet.

My AX had by far the most distinctive and overpowering smell, a combination of 9 years of chain smoking owners - who apparently kept the windows rolled up and the air vents off - and cheap feu orange air fresheners.  It was so strong you could practically see it and in 3 years of regular cleaning it never faded.

The smell of new car never fails to make me feel nauseous. I hate it, I can imagine all those carcinogens I'm breathing in. My daily Micra smells like a tramps sock and is much preferable  :-D

My old MK111 Escort had a strange smell, it was a combination of shultz, engine blow by and burnt seam sealer, mixed with that old anti-freeze smell from the heater matrix.

I had welded that old tub from arsehole to breakfast time, inner sills, outer sills a strange crack that appeared from the rear wheel arch lip to under the door shut!

I even replaced the tailgate floor and the little bits of chassis that the rear springs sat on.

It had a non injection XR3 engine with a 4 speed box, the five speed would not fit in an early shell as the inner wings were a different shape on the 5 speed shells.

It had started life a L spec and left me as a GL spec, better seats, better carpet, rear wash wipe, ect ect.

Was nicer to drive than a Marina or Ital, was more ecomomical too with the weber twin choke than the VV had ever been.

I had loads of hassel with stupid things with that car, like it would never start from cold, that nearly drove me mental as you could roll it down a slight hill and it would start with a bump, but not on the starter.

After a battery, alternator, full service, even changed the dizzy, it would still not start from cold.

I mentioned it to the guy who MOT's all my cars and has dne for years, he said change the starter, it must have rough brush gear or worn brushes and it spikes the ignition, causing it to act like it's over advanced on the ignition timming!

He was dead right, cured for a starter motor.

New car smell can give me a very nasty headache, luckily my cars tend to smell like an airing cupboard, albeit one that's suffered a long term leaky cylinder. Now I'm the proud owner of a K series this could well lead me to enjoying an interior smelling of exhaust, courtesy of a garden hose of course.
