Great pics ,who'd a thunk it a 1970's car Magazine Giant Test won by a Renault! It was a forgone conclusion every Giant Test was won by aRenault,Citroen or Alfasud.

I remember one with aGS a 12TS and Alfasud - they didn't know what to do. I blame car for many shite rusty Renault 15,16 and 17s that cluttered my moms drive when I was a kid.

Looks like it started cornering hard and has then made a start on one of those comical sideways hopping things people do when they try not to fall over.  Must've been going some to get it do that... likewise the Avenger.

I've got that magazine somewhere, loved that photo of the R6 up on 2 wheels. :)

I managed to get my Amazon to do that.

It's still the British offering among them that has my wantage attached to it most.

Am I one of those overintegrated furrinners, or what's the bloody story?

I truly believe the Avenger was the best of the bunch and I'd have bought one if I was in that new car market bracket back then.

Buy British.

Are you voting Avenger 'cause it had auto option (BW45 I think).?

Good call if so as the awkward clutch pedal was the worst thing about driving the Avenger.

I'd vote Avenger as it had a two door option and because I worked (briefly) in the Chrysler factory where the engines were made.

Seems like a bit of an odd grouping. I don't think I'd really compare the Avenger to any of the other three as they are all smaller cars. The Avenger was more comparable to a Datsun 1400 (510), Renault 12 and maybe Simca 1100 surely? I guess as far as a comparable Datsun, it's the test year 1972, that makes it an odd one. One year earlier you could have had a new 510, one year later a new 710 (140J) but there was a gap in '72 where there was only the 610 (160B) which I'd guess is maybe a little larger than an Avenger. Still, it seems daft comparing it with a 100A!

I would have thought a Hillman Imp would have been a more comparable Rootes offering at that time maybe?

Ah, but this is Car magazine, isn't it?  It's like Top Gear now, there's no way on earth a British offering could or would have won a group test.  Car was rampantly pro-German (pro-anything foreign!) well before it became fashionable.

I'm with you (if American isn't available). ;)

Deviating slightly from topic here, but the very old editions of The Observer's Book of Automobiles only ever gave descriptions, history and general information about British and U.S. car manufacturers. Patriotism, and quite right too.
