Didn't they use double wishbone suspension on the front, therefore making the the bonnet line too low to use a K-series? (hurrah)

IIRC they didn't use Honda's double wishbone set-up. They certianly use K-series lumps.

I assumed Station was still on about the 600?

I had a 414 bubble some years ago now. A really nice motor. Lovely ride, good performance and economy (albeit with an engine/box combo you're not interested in) all in all very capable. Only annoying thing was the pedal position. The clutch was horrible. Far too high. A traffic jam on the M40 once left me in agony. So I agree that auto is the way to go.

Engine lesson:

600:

1.8, 2.0 (NASP) and 2.3 are all Honda B series 4 cylinder units.  Not brilliant but not bad - except for the 2.3 which sufers from cracked heads.

2.0 turbo petrol is a Rover T series (same as the 820 Vitesse) and is pretty tough.  HGs can leak oil but are easy to change and HGF rarely causes significant damage.

2.0 turbo diesel is the L series - good engine all round.  Bith turbo engines can overwhelm the differential bearings but these are cheap and easy to upgrade.

400 HHR:

1.4 and 1.6 (manual) -  K series engines.  Bit fragile and an HGF can have fatal consequences.  Fit the Landrover gasket and oil rail as a precautionary measure and you'll probably be fine.

1.6 auto - Honda D series.  Tough engine but needs plenty of revs to make good progress.

2.0 petrol - T series (no turbo).  Comments on weepy HG apply but tiogh, torquey and (in my view) pick of the bunch

It's a 95,000 mile 15 year old automatic petrol manufactured by a dead company opportunistically priced at £600 with only half an MOT remaining.

Seems value to me.

Oh. Two seater. Were they all two seaters? If so, damn good answer by Suzuki to a question absolutely nobody asked.
