Happy Birthday Raymond Loewy

Recommended Posts

Today would be the birthday of Raymond Loewy, a stylist who was heavily involved in the success* of Studebaker and their Avanti...

We also have him to thank for the Shell logo and the coke bottle.

Personally I think he'd suit a Jaaaaaaaaag.

I actually like Avanti's. it was one of those cars that kept refusing to die without a fight

It's amazing the number of things Raymond Loewy did design in his career, particularly the ones that are still in use like the Coke bottle and various logos. Of all the things he did though, the GM PD4501 "Scenicruiser" is my all time favourite.

Just a few of the corporate logos he designed:

Planes:

Trains:

And automobiles:

But his sense of beauty didn't stop there.

He did this, too...

 ...possibly by Xeroxing the Stude design at 81% without adjusting the height...

Who else could have created such an iconic design for a pencil sharpener

His studio also designed the 1956 Sunbeam Rapier, perhaps the only beautiful car that Rootes ever produced

<design geek mode [on]>

Loewy didn't design the original Coca Cola 'contour' bottle, he re-styled it some time in the 50s/60's... it had been in existence for several decades before he worked on it.

He did introduce different sized bottles though, and I think he was also responsible for either the design of the first can, or the branding on it.
