Bren Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Any body had any experience of the above? If I remember correctly I bought some around 15 years ago and all it seemed good for was blocking up the nozzle on the can. Can anybody tell me if matters have improved before I part with any money?
Mr Lobster Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 I used some last year on the red R4 - think it was a Halfords can - and it was pretty good actually. I'd certainly use it again.
wackywacerwill Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 I've always found the filling properties lacking though that's most likely down to laziness and shoddy prep. Partridge 1
HMC Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 I bought some bilt hamber 'high bild' which was a total disaster. More due to my shocking incompetence with bodywork rather than the product i would say as my neightbour had nice results from the same, but he is fairly experienced with body and paintwork.
saucedoctor Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 The CarPlan shizz did a good job of filling in the small gouges on my alloys. I did have to do an awful lot of sanding down, though. I found that 03 followed by 00 grade wire wool was useful in this endeavour.
Timewaster Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Several very light coats and leave it a week to dry before you try and flat it. 2 weeks if you can.I'm not joking about the 2 weeks.
Partridge Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 I recently rubbed down part of a wing on the Mercedezzz, and found out prepping correctly really is a good idea...
Talbotman Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Your better off buying some 2k filler primer and hardener- mix some up and brush it on or even use mini rollers you'll get great coverage and plenty of thickness to flat back once dry.Far better than the aerosol based off the shelf jobbies. cobblers, Barry Cade and fordperv 3
cort16 Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 The upol high 5 is the best stuff. You can get it from halfords the own brand stuff is bollocks overrun 1
cobblers Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Yeah just use some 2k stuff, it's so much better than anything out of an aierosol it's incomparable. One good (sprayed) coat of 2k filler primer is like 10/15 coats of your usual grey aerosol stuff. It sands a shitload better too, and you can sand it after about an hour depending on temperature. 10 coats of normal stuff (or maybe 7 or 8 coats of halfords "filler" primer) would take you about 3 or 4 days to build up! I've got tackle to spray with, but I often brush it on instead if I'm doing a "spot" repair or something. I used this on my van. It's as thick as you like, cracking stuff. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1Lt-2K-White-Primer-Filler-High-Build-FREE-ACTIVATOR-4-1-Mix-with-Activator-/331040704630?pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item4d13904876
FredTransit Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 just seencsome in the 99p Stores (chain). Their grey primer's OK so worth a try?
Cavcraft Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Your better off buying some 2k filler primer and hardener- mix some up and brush it on or even use mini rollers you'll get great coverage and plenty of thickness to flat back once dry.Far better than the aerosol based off the shelf jobbies. Piss taking aside, is there any chance you could kindly do a guide (with pictures and whatnot) to doing this, please? I really need to tidy the Transit up and I'd previously owned one where a former owner had done the above and it was a really good job.
FredTransit Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 is it white cav? My paint supplier does diamond white coach enamel for £15 a L. Goes on a treat with the afore mentioned rollers.
fordperv Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 What Talbot man said, I found some of the aerosol ones reacted with paint when putting the topcoat on
cort16 Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 I prefer to use fine surface filler and regular primer. It's good that stuff but takes a bit of practice to put it on. I know this as there's loads of it stuck to my shoes.
overrun Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 The yellow filler primer in the tin with the Escort Cosworth on is decent enough.Think it's Hycote.
