Lets talk about the Renault 19

I have to say I never really liked these. I always had the mega horn for a mk1 16v Clio and at the time they're were too expensive. The 16v 19's always seemed much cheaper.

but I just couldn't bring myself to buy one.

there was a nice looking red one in the ebay thread for £600 wasn't there?

When the 19 first came out there was a recall on them for something or other, I take one into our local dealer along with a list of the 200 or so that the company had nationally to show them that it was on the list.  The service man on the counter said something along the lines of 'Oh shit you're not bringing all of those into us are you?'.

One new years eve I had a Shiters dream trip out, starting out from Ipswich in a 3 month old Renault 19 16V, drop someone in Croydon to get a Volvo, continue to Heathrow tp swap the 19 for a Peugeot 605 SVE and back to Ipswich.

I think our Mr_Bo11 translated a French magazine article on the R19 a few years ago.  Quite a few novel features on the design, and I thought the 3 door looked like a nicer version of the Mk2 VW Scirocco.

I'd have one, in that kind of flat blue.

I had a Chamade (booted 19). It drove really nicely, was comfy and had decent equipment. Actually made a couple of quid when I sold it many moons ago.

Erm, is it me or are these actually sounding quite good?

My 2 cents, having had a couple, phase 1s look the best

Chammades handle the best

hatches are practical and can be had cheap

Cabrios, if you get a well sorted phase 1, they are amazing and the handling isn't too bad, quite rigid for a soft top

I remember they had a wee plasic stereo facia cover that clipped over the stereo, not sure why, but i had a few of them with it, iirc you could clip the cover unter the middle of the dash when using the stereo.

I wouldn't mind that, but I bed the insurance would be mega.

The chap i'm buying my 19 from is also the same chap selling the red car, its not minty but its a sound basis for a good project. He also has a blue chammade that he's keeping

Posted

Is the Chamade a 16v one?

Yes all his 19s are 16v, and the chammade he is not selling!

A phase 2 chamade 16v in dark blue is on my want list...

I've got one of those - somewhere.

There was one on RR for about £500 that would not sell last year.

I can see that selling on somewhere like PH, maybe but not the Blue Forum. What happened to it?

That's a shame :( Ta for the link but I'm banned from RR.

Hahaha nope! I said "The Rover 800 is a bit curse word" or something along those lines got banned...

Shhhh! Nobody is supposed to be paying attention to these yet, I have had my evil eye on the R19 since last year thinking I would be the only person in the world paying them any mind. Firstly, my interest was suddenly piqued by spotting the example pictured below and realising it had probably been several years since I saw a phase one 19 in the flesh. Then I read the excellent piece on the Blenheim Gang website about what a subtly great bit of design the car is (Right! Nobody had ever thought about it before but suddenly it all made sense), and then for a while I had the pleasure of seeing on a regular basis a high spec (TXE?) phase one hatch in a fetching shade of gold and it all just 'clicked' for me. These things look ace, and must exist in such minuscule numbers that you could legitimately make a case for driving one for fun on the grounds of saving it for the nation or whatnot.

Luckily, being a Renault, they are never going be worth any money so if there are actually any left next year I might pick one up on a whim and see how it goes.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only weirdo that wants one. They do look ace, in that way only an old Renault can. Phase one hatches almost look (say it quietly)-retro...

Whist there aren't that many about, there are still enough kicking about that it's not impossible to find a decent one. I'm thinking that I'd have a decent one next year if my potential purchase of the ******* ** *** doesn't come off.
