I'm weeding out a few more unnecessary exhibits in the Museum of Superior Automobiles.

First: 1984 Trabant Kübelwagen.

Complete but totally stripped. The shell's pretty good, with just a few minor scabby bits. The hood's present but shabby. The engine's a bit rattly. It's UK-registered and has a Kalashnikov holder.

Price: £1000

This is what it looked like before disassembly...

Second: Volga M24 DB

Details here: http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/car-advert/volga/gaz-24/1979/213897/

AS price substantially lower than advertised.

Third: Marina 1300 Coupe

Details here: http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/car-advert/morris/marina/1979/213886/

Again – special price for AS gropists.

That volga wagon is amazing!!!!! I imagine there are a few rigger boot wearers out there who would like to get their hands on it.

Indeed... they'll be all over that, although it is at least LHD which might put a few off.

In the unlikely case that the Marina is still free in January I'll be interested.

Good luck!

Those little Trabbi Kubelwagens seem only good for pootling along the border areas doing patrols. Probably what they were designed for.

Just read on wiki that they have an RFI (radio frequency interference) sheilded ignition, in case those dirty capitalists try and disable them with some kind of electromagetic induction weapon!

Those lil Trabbies are called Tramps -and were indeed border guard jobbies.

When I was bulk importing, back in the 90's, I asked my mate in Germany (who was collecting them/storing them for me) to find one.

Whilst all the saloons were free, I had to pay £1100 for mine, delivered by trailer from Berlin. It looked spot on, clearly original, so we dropped the simple roof & sidescreens & all jumped in & set off for the pub. Then I realised we had no clutch, with a max speed of 15mph.

Seeing as it needed to drive down the autoroute home, 15 mph really wasnt on. So,we searched through the usual stockpile of spares, and found a knackered block with a good clutch. 20 mins later, sorted, off to the boozer & en route the following day.

We used to A frame (the old type -with bug rubber buffers pressing against the bumper) the designated spares car home (laden to the brim with parts) and drive the other 3, averaging 55-60 mph. But whatever I did, I couldn't get the Tramp past 50, and it seemed to be working much harder than the others.

It was only when Dave mentioned that virtually the whole car was metal (as opposed to Duraplast) that the penny clicked. I was 50% heavier.

Here it is at the Belgian border. Please ignore the bent number plates, (off my then road legal 601s saloon):-

I took plenty of photos of each vehicle (-artfully taken to exclude the others) as I would have to prove to Brighton VRO that I had personally imported each.

Fun to drive, simple to mend, I really wouldn't recommend the heater, a small blast furnace with its own fuel tank located right up against the gravity fed petrol tank.

Sadly it was burnt out in my barn fire, but the distortion was minimal, so we decided to save it, stripping it down to a bare shell, rustproofing and hammeriting white (spare gallon to hand). I've a photo someplace of it hanging out the back of my then Landie. Currently racked high in the barn -for that' one day' moment.

NAB 857D -I kinda miss you

That's great that you saved so many. How many did you bring over roughly?

I guess they never really had to go very fast doing border patrols.

Just been reading about the rather primative heater...!

I saw my first Trabi Kubel funnily enough in Granada-Spain 1990 as the local military were using them..then onto Germany where i saw heaps...

We brought 4 or 5 in, every fortnight, for several months.

The weekends got bawdier, the cars got boring ,and free supply then started to dry up.

I prob brought in 75(ishhhh)

Still have a nice blue handpainted P50 estate, couple of 601's (early & late 2 stroke) and the Tramp. Hanker after a 1.1, someday

Did you do a write up of the trabby rescue for jalopy back in the day Mr Bickle?

There you go -slap of preservative paint & off to store.....

Yes, I think I did get a write up published, but I'm really hazy on the memory.

I wrote several articles, most never published.

Possibly a Trabbie tale got through- there were many to tell. Nearly every trip brought ''adventure''!

Wow I didn't think there were ever that many in the country. I wonder how many survive.
I remeber reading about that chap with about 20 in his garden.

We used to knock them out at £600(driving), £700(MOT'd), £800(Uk registered) £900 (UK taxed 1 yr). 1994(ish) remember..

The vast majority went at £600, and went like hot cakes.

So yes, a few of mine there, probably.

Correction, it was 49.

So probably a fair few of your saves there. Anyone know if he had to get rid of them in the end or what their fate was?

Looks like he relented.  If he really wanted to keep them, surely he could have found some covered storage so they were out of the elements and away from public view.

Sam, do you still have that Zapo 968M or has it gone??

Entirely btw, what ever happened to your Chaika?

The WANKA's still in the receive position at present. Parts aren't easy to come by at sub-oligarch prices, but a stash is slowly amassing at a friend's house in Moscow. Getting it on the road in time for the 2014 Goodwood Revival is the vague plan.

Nice to meet you Sam - probably the most enjoyable tat-purchasing event I've ever assisted with..
