Was it not Kia who assembled the 121 and Festiva?

Again according to HML there are 5 R18 diesels on the road, 3 as 18 Diesel, 1 as 18GTD diesel and 1 as 18GTD which will become 2 shortly once the one on my drive is taxed, it's in the V5 as 18GTD, not mine unfortunately.

Those were everywhere! Sort of a 1990s trendmobile. Now they are as good as extinct without anybody really noticing or even missing them.

Mazda 323 3-door (aka 323P). Can't be many of these left either - think they were only sold in the UK for a couple of years. If I had followed my old man's advice, I might have bought one of these with something like 7k on the clock, in white, with 3-spoke alloys and a roof spoiler, back in 2001. But I didn't.

Tonight I saw a car that I thought had been claimed completely by engine raping and rot.  Fiat Mirafiori.

Obviously, I didn't get a picture of it because my camera batteries had expired by the time it arrived.  Luckily, I found this picture of the self-same car online.

There are probably more sports than any other version of the 131 surviving in the uk ,the irish love them as well.

Renault fuego

Saw one in Sainsbury's car park this morning.

At least I think I saw one, all I glimpsed was the bonnet and wing with it's plastic sandwich filling showing.

In the 1980s Mazda and Ford both owned shares in Kia. Ford owned shares in Mazda too. Ford wanted a cheap entry car for the US - so it got Mazda to license the 121 to Kia, which built them from about 1986 for the US market as the Ford Festiva. Kia also produed the car for the local market as the Pride. Exports started in 1991 - UK was the first European market for Kia, and at the same time the 121 changed to the 4-door "bubble" version. Kia then developed its own Pride evolution called the Kia Avella, which was sold as the Ford Aspire in the US and the Festiva in Australia, but was never exported to Europe.

US automakers saw Korea as a good source of cheap cars - GM used Daewoo to build Astra Mk2 as the Pontiac Le Mans, while Chrysler sourced some small cars from Hyundai - basically Mitsubishi Colts, badged as Dodge Colt.

I think it's quite cute actually. It's one of those cars that look a lot better in real life than on photos. The Nash Metropolitan would be another example. Or the 1958 Edsel.
