Not sure if this has been done before but I suspect there are a few horror stories out there.

Here are a couple of my most recent

My Mark three Transit  suffered clutch failure (wouldn't declutch but still drove) at Reading my teenage son got it back home 35 miles.

A couple of weeks back my Skoda 4x4 Octavia decided to become natural aspirated on the M4 Spur but still limped home

Couldn't work out why the oil pressure light hadn't come on, and there wasn't any horrific knocking..... then I realised where the oil had come from.

Apparently "they do that". Chucked the diff pin through the casing, dumped the oil on the road via the exhaust pipe. STANK.

Saw a Tranny clutch worse than that, once. It was dragged into the workshop with the complaint of all drive having been lost, and there being 'a bit of a rattling noise'. Shove it over the pit, propshaft off, gearbox off...and it was raining destroyed clutch. In sweeping all the bits out of the pit floor, I counted something like 40 bits: individual rivets, shards of backing plate, snapped springs, the lot. Even the thrust bearing had come to pieces.

Christ knows how the driver achieved this, it was only a milk float. Wish I'd some pictures tho'; the thought of it is making me smile even yet, and I wish I could share!

Here is a fine example of why the AA shouldn't be allowed near your car. I went to look at this estafette last week with a slightly rattly engine. It started ok but had a knock so switched it off. The owner then tows it round the corner and calls the AA out to get it recovered to my unit. This is where it all went wrong. Twat decides that it needs revving right up to diagnose. Next thing is a big bang and a non running estafette. I was hoping I could rebuild the lump but no chance now

at least the Mk3 only needs a clutch. Mk6 would need a flywheel and starter too.....

Only major mechanical trauma I've suffered was the miniMetro 1.3 HLS dropping a valve. I didn't dismantle the engine, but the next owner did. Blurry shot of OMG PISTON KAOS.
