Those shit aftermarket alarms.

My joy of finally acquiring a PRV-powered Volvo 760 has been rudely cut short by one of these bastard systems.

So when I picked the car up two days ago, I was told the alarm and immobiliser system weren't active, and sure enough, the power terminals weren't on the battery and everything was dandy.

Today I changed the battery to a stronger one, leaving the terminals for the alarm off as before. Opened a door and yep... The loudest fucking siren you've ever heard. So I went and got a battery for the remote - lights up but of course doesn't communicate with the system. Tried putting the marked terminals on the battery and no change there either.

Tried looking for the brain - not in any of the obvious places, tried all above the passenger and drivers footwells, engine bay.

Any ideas on how to preferably kill this bastard of a system and get some Swedish V6 action in over the weekend?

90s car thieves most welcome.

System is called "Laserline" if that helps?

Just keep snooping round for it, it's bound to be under the dash somewhere. When you find the brain there will be a connector and a load of black wires coming off it - follow them to where they've been cut into the main loom, it's usually fairly straighforward, just takes a lot of picking leccy tape and cable ties off.

Some wires will be piggy backed on to an existing one leaving the existing wire intact, these will be to make the indicators flash etc. Just cut these off and insulate the ends.

2 or 4 wires will be joined to (usually fairly thick) existing wires in the car loom, but with a section of the original wire removed. These will be the immobilising wires - just rejoin the original loom matching the colours.

Perfect, cheers for that, confirms I need to find the bastard brain. Any idea of where they usually hid them? Has to be begin the bulkhead somewhere Shirley?

The one in the Saab (also a shite aftermarket job) was under the dash n the drivers side. I managed to work out which circuit broke the supply to the fuel pump and reconnected the wires. Then it was a simple unplug and throw away job :D

Last time I had a car with one I unbolted the siren, walked home with it going off in my coat pocket then smashed it to dust with a big hammer. Unless shite.

All the bits will just be stuffed under the dash by the bodger(s) who installed it - get one or even better two gas soldering irons (one with the air nozzle for the heatshrink)

Just cut off all the black wiring that'll be taped to the original loom then solder and heatshrink the loom back together, takes a while but worth it. :)

If you can't find a brain, look how many wires come out of the siren box. If it's more than 3 or 4, then you might have a REALLY shit one where the brain was inside the siren. I installed one of those in my Beetle, took 5 minutes and was rubbish. Didn't even go off when someone took the back window out.

I've done quite a few of these removals.

All wires out the alarm are black or should be to confuse tea leaves but as they cut into coloured wires of the original loom no biggie.

The usual circuits they cut into 99% of the time are the low amp starting circuit (from ignition key), fuel pump and sometimes the LT to coil feed.

Just take your time and be prepared to find horrors and make good as you go or it'll bite you on the arse when you least expect it.

Have you looked under the steering column shroud? The one with the vent in it. Dunno about alarms but that seems to be a favourite place for bodgers to splice stuff into the loom.

Then again, it might be a bit of an obvious place.

Thanks guys, just a little update now that its sorted.

Failing to find the brain, apparently it can be stuffed behind the radio somewhere, I came across a wire tapping into the ignition system under the steering column shrouds (cheers for that tip) with a fuse on it. Removed the fuse and the system is completely inactive and everything is good again. So all a thief would've needed was a star screwdriver
