SOLD: 1990 W124 300E - new owner's adventures

£500 anyone? I seem to have more cars than money at the moment. I would update the title, but it seems you can't do that anymore.

EDIT - found how to do it...

Posted

I do seem to be good at buying cars no-one else wants. A fleet reduction is very necessary. Offers?!

Posted

Was I really trying to sell it as early as March?! I'd only just bought it then. So I probably was... Doubt they're still interested.

At the moment, I reckon I might just get away with keeping it. If invoices actually get paid. So, it's for sale, but I'm not going to too much effort about it.

Just for the record, I really want this car. DW and I have swapped several pm's about it.

Unfortunately, after being off work for six weeks after an op, finances have hit the buffers.

That, and coupled with the fact there's been almost no interest in my Grand Voyager, I've had to let the idea of ownership go.

Travelling also comes into the equation. We're at almost opposite sides of the country. Normally that wouldn't be a problem, but once again, finances come into it. Two train tickets for me and Mrs Tetley come to just shy of £150. Mrs T always likes to accompany me on roadtrips. We've done many. Six and a half hour train journey too. We'd normally stay overnight on a trip like that, but once again, finances.

Life's a shit.

If you've still got this when the situation improves DW, perhaps we can re-open negotiations

Doesn't really make sense as to why this has not sold. What is the asking price now?

Posted

As per title, sale is actually on hold at the moment. Waiting for funds to allow rear subframe mountings to be repaired - though a cheeky offer might just tempt me to sell as-is. Bear in mind that I have a refurbed caliper, new discs & pads for the back end now - not fitted as I've not had time.

Posted

Umm, must pay more attention to thread title adjustments. Although I just give up with VA's posts  :D

A cheeky offer is tempting but I would imagine the £200 content of my building society account would fall somewhat short of merely cheeky methinks. I have no wish to insult a fellow AS'er, even accidentally.

Posted

That is indeed too cheeky. Double that could tempt me but you'll have to be quick as (money permitting) I'll be sending it in for welding (and therefore more expenditure) as soon as I can, at which point the £400 price is annulled.

Posted

Welding has been carried out, so she's back on the market. I haven't fitted the new rear brakes yet (I'm slowly losing the will to live due to unrelated matters) but new discs (two sets because the seller was a berk), new pads, new flexis and one new caliper included. I seem to have no money, so this really does need to go.

Posted

Woke up today and felt a whole lot less pathetic, so the Merc now has new flexis, discs, pads and a caliper FITTED! Odd to have a handbrake that works.

Oh, and a chap is coming to view it on Wednesday. If it sells, then I can spend a bit improving the BX and 2CV. Fingers are crossed.

Where abouts in Wales are you Mr Wobbler. The Accord's died and I can't persuade the better half that an XM Auto won't lead to lots of monetary pain.

Posted

Looks like this could be on its way then DW.

Hope so for you really, but must admit I will be gutted.

I've wanted this from day one, but as you know, lots of events conspired against me, the biggest being off work for six weeks without pay.

Don't think I'll be having the e200 either, the biodegradeable engine wiring loom issue has scared me shitless. I've heard replacing it costs a fortune.

Near Aberystwyth. I'll let you know if Wednesday turns out to be a waste of time. Have just clocked up 60 miles in it cruising along the coast road. Lovely.

Wednesday was indeed a waste of time, so this is still available. Be like Junkman, but with a smaller car, with more doors and a smaller engine...

DW this Merc is a great car but can I say (no offence etc) but the pictures on your advert on car and classic aren't very good. They're in shadow, slightly out of focus and don't do the car justice at all given some of the other pics I've seen of it on here.

Also the title to your advert doesn't mention that it's a Mercedes (merc!), EClass or a 300. I'd have something like  "Mercedes E300 W124 Long T&T - Very Clean"

I don't mean to tell you how to suck eggs and all it's just an observation.

Can't do much about the photo quality - C&C helpfully f*cks up the quality for you. I could try some better pics though. Now I've got a chunk of writing out of the way and it isn't raining, I may get some fresh ones. Take your title comments on board though.

Ah, but your black W124 saloon is up and running apparently.

After a quick discussion via text yesterday morning, before I went to the military/airshow, I don't think the Black W124 will ever be mine. It's worth more in bits. Certainly more than I can offer at the mo. I think BD has one or two others interested anyway.

Buying the exhaust and tyres for my Grand Voyager set me back a bit, and came just at the wrong time. Oh bother!!!

Hey DW, wonder if you'd fancy a straight swap for the ex-Wuvvum Rover 75?  It's a 2.0 KV6 Club manual saloon, 1999 on a V, about 125k on the clock, cambelt is of unknown age, comes with about 9 months MOT and 3 months tax (I can check this when it stops raining).  ABS light has just come back on, which will be a sensor - it comes with a full set of spare sensors in the glovebox (bar the one that got fitted for the MOT). Aircon doesn't blow cold but the electric windows work so you just have to man up.  Various old gimmer minor dings and scratches and a non-matching (but working) driver's door mirror for the proper shiter look.

I'm only in Swansea so could happily deliver, or offer you tea and biscuits if you'd prefer to collect, or meet half way in Carmarthen or summat.

Oh, and it's got a properly curvy rear number plate, not a boggo rectangular one looking lost.  These things are important.

Thanks Skizzer - the offer of tea and biscuits is always hard to turn down but sadly a fleet reduction is required - I just can't afford to run as many car as I have. We're meant to be leading a more self-sufficient, low-income sort of a life, and I'm sort of not being very good at it with my petrolhead obsession.

The Rover looks nice though. It's the only modern car that my wife has eyes for - she really liked the Conny estate we had. (mind you, she never tried driving it!).

Posted

Fair enough!  I can relate to that, it sounds a lot like the Skizzer household.  I'm actually supposed to sell the Rover at some point to make room for the return of the XJ6, so swapping it for a Merc might lead to domestic strife.

Tea and biscuits offer still stands if you're passing this way

WTF? When did I buy this...?

£1995??!!

;-)

Posted

Hi m8 is it stil 4 sail?

Posted

I'm always open to offers on this fine example of Teutonic engineering.

Posted

The Merc is clearly missing Ian, as it has thrown a hissy fit leccy-window-wise. Use this morning of my limited mechanical ability has traced a blown 25A fuse, which even I may be able to sort...

Posted

Huzzah! Easy fix. As it happens, apparently the BX I swapped for the Golf snapped a handbrake cable this week. Clearly I've angered the handbrake cable gods!

Taken any photos of the Merc at its new abode yet?
