pompei Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 I know that there is some SERA love on here. I've had a thing for these for some time and (to cut a long story short) am going to see one. What do I need look out for in particular? BTW If you type SERA into one of the car sales search facilities (can't remember which) it brings up MaSERAti.

dollywobbler Posted May 13, 2013 Posted May 13, 2013 Make sure the air-con works. Otherwise they get a bit hot.
Junkman Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 Looks like shit. Are you sure you don't want a Ma-SERA-ti instead?
pompei Posted May 14, 2013 Author Posted May 14, 2013 The seller wants over £4,000 for it. Which is about 4 times what I want to pay.
trigger Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 Wasn't it Volky who bought one of these? Any car with gullwing doors is alright by me.
HillmanImp Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 These are GR9.5. You may remember Volksy and I got the free one from Kinkersaab a couple of years back and I have to say it was one of the most fun cars I have driven. The little 1.5 engine goes really well, its handles lovely and is quite a nice place to be. We had what is a rarer manual (i don't know your leaning) and it gave my old Saab 900 a shock going round the ring road. Interior was pretty ghastly but its a 90's car and is probably better than the competition of the same era. It is like a goldfish bowl like and will get hot. The engines are the same as the ones in most of the other Toyotas of the era so I understand they are pretty bulletproof. The door struts are quite hard to get hold of IIRC and I nearly broke Voksy's hand when we were replacing the CV boot when trying to get of the velocity joint as was still a little pissed from the night before and was not a very good aim.
HillmanImp Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 The seller wants over £4,000 for it. Which is about 4 times what I want to pay. We sold ours for £1,300. Its not worth £4,000 unless its gold plated. Wasn't it Volky who bought one of these? Any car with gullwing doors is alright by me. Aye it was Trigger. Sorry, I was writing that post when you posted your message.
phil_lihp Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 Tidy one on ebay right now for £1650 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Sera-/330922480102?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item4d0c8451e6 These look quite a nice little tool to blat around in. Back when I were a lad, I remember my I Spy Cars book listing it but I never did get to tick it off as I never saw one. It said that use of the car in the UK 'may be illegal' due to its import status.

This is the Sera, the prototype of the MR2 Unlike the MR2, this has the futuristic "Gull wing doors" - that guarantees lots of attention - especially at petrol stations! a small boot that can actually takes a weeks shopping There is this manual one for £2k on C&C. http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C348925 But it looks like its been owned by a right Barry. Fucking awful wheels. Kenwood Headunit Powerflow exhaust / back box HID headlights Aftermarket Horn Rear Spoiler Lenso RS5 Alloy Wheels Shortened gear stick Door edge\Footwell neons Door speakers & tweeters, with rear speakers And awful everything else. This looks better. With the SLSS sound system too. http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C335152 £1,295
Volksy Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 I quite liked ours, the doors, whilst initially cool, get a bit embarrassing after a while. Running gear is shared with the Starlet of the same era, so easy to get mechanical bits for. Trim can be difficult to find, including a lot of the optional stuff. Try and get one with the blinds for the roofglass intact (ours were missing). I'd also try and find a manual one too. There's a strong following for them, I found a guy in Manchester who breaks them for parts.

face Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Do these have the same lump as the Paseo? For some reason, I really like Paseos.
pompei Posted May 16, 2013 Author Posted May 16, 2013 I think they are essentially the same car, without the doors and the fancy extras. And with a lot less weight!
holbeck Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 I have to admit, I quite like this. How much headroom is there in one of these? I only ask because I'm over 6', but I could see me having to stoop in this. Anyone know different?
Station Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Seen a few on Gumtree for around 500 quid. Dreaming at 4 grand!!
pompei Posted May 18, 2013 Author Posted May 18, 2013 I spoke to the seller again yesterday. Apparently it is well known in club circles and is considered to be one of the best, having had loads of work and new bits which were specially imported. It's also got a "SERA" registration, not that that has any attraction to me. I suppose 4 grand may be acceptable to a wild enthusiast but still strikes me as being extra salty.
