Range Rover P38

Every time I see a Range Rover or X5 I immediately think "New Labour".

 Bloody hell, that's an idea guaranteed to put me off Range Rovers for life!

OK, today we went and had a look, and a test drive. Mrs R struggled to get in, but agreed once there that she was in a nice place. So we drove about a bit, and stopped in a side street beside a Jeep Cherokee, which is something you may remember from an earlier thread. I was looking down into the Jeep... waaaaaaaaaaaaaay down! We decided it was too tall. Tall vehicles? Tall is what we want, but it now seems there's an upper limit. So, medium-tall then. The Cherokee was a surprisingly accessible height, which the RR isn't. A Disco (which would ONLY be acceptable in V8 auto flava) would suffer the same failing.

Back to plan A then, where a Voyager is top of the list. One thing the RR shares with the Voyager, which is actually quite an important feature: level access. Open the door and you can slide straight in without hoisting your feet over a sill, in or out. I looked at a Zafira, idly, not being able to remember if they had a deep sill; they do. That sill is one of the issues, and where the RR and Voyager score. Voyager scores over the RR by not having to accommodate all the 4x4 running gear, so the floor is nearer to the road.

Meanwhile... on the way home in the 406 I stopped for petrol, and at the next pump was a Honda Shuttle. Aha, thinks I, big roomy MPV without being too high. With the owner's blessing I checked out the sill: wide but very low, verging on slight. So here's another contender, from left field! Honda Shuttle, aka Stream, billed as a 2.2/2.3/2.4 and quite possibly true for all three sizes. Column auto, which I like; 7 seats, which mostly won't be needed. Plenty of room for a wheelchair. I'd like a bit more engine, but I haven't driven a Shuttle yet, it could be a heck of a powerful 2.2 for all I know.

The quest continues...

A relative has a Honda Shuttle. It's been epically reliable. Just keeps going. They're almost completely forgotten and therefore well worth a look. Super-bland styling.

My last work had an 05 Honda Stream VTEC. It was so awful to drive that I sometimes opted to use my own car, on my own fuel, rather than drive it.

Rav4? Actually that's a possibility. Anyone got a pic of one with a door open so I can see how much sill there is? I'm wondering about Picassos and Vitaras too. A workmate has offered to bring his Picasso round tonight so we can try it; it's even for sale, but sadly is a manual diesel.

There are two things against that.... one, even with prices in freefall, it'll be at least 20 years before I can afford one; and two, it's German.

Cort16, I'm going to check that out!

Meanwhile, Rob came round with the Picasso and Mrs R tried herself in it. That went very smoothly and she slid out again just as easily, so I reckon a 2.0 auto Picasso is on the shopping list. Unless anyone knows of a bigger petrol engine they came with? I'm thinking the 2.0 should be the same as in my 406, yes? Someone enlighten me please?

I'm new here so sorry if I insulted you with a sausage eating kraut mobile!

burraston, I spotted that, no worries.... you wouldn't know about my inbuilt resistance to German motors. Citroen C8... as far as I know, the biggest petrol engine they come with is 2.0, which doesn't seem quite enough given that you can get the same one in a Picasso.

The Toyota Picnics pointed out by mark-r have troubled my radar and I know you can get them with a proper gearbox (none of yer driving-school DIY rubbish for me) but I do need to see one with the door open, to see how deep the sills are. That is going to be a dealbreaker.

Mulitpla? See above about the sills. Actually one of my customers has a 55-plate Multipla, I might see if I can get a good look tomorrow.

For all those posting prospects (and please continue!), here's the shopping list:

MPV or 4x4;higher than a "normal" car but not too high

Petrol engine, minimum 2.0 litre

Automatic gearbox

not German (which also eliminates Ford Galaxy and Seat Alhambra)

no sill for ease of access

minimum of 4 doors

room for wheelchair

nothing from the grey or brown parts of the spectrum

Price: flexible. If it's cheap enough I'm interested immediately, or in the very near future we should be in a position to look at younger and therefore dearer offerings.

Location: within daytrip distance from Barrow-in-Furness. So don't be showing me stuff in Oxford or Inverness.
