Mondeo derv autos are getting cheaper now, had a look and '02' plate estate for £900 a while back, the Ford engine is good, although some can suffer from injector/pump faults, and the added advantage of the auto is no DMF problems.

Or how about thinking outside the box and getting a Fairway Driver? Loads of cheap ones straight out of service as the London regs. have all but taken them off the road.

Citroen ZX is about as cheap a diesel auto as you'll find, though the BX and (as WTC points out convincingly) the Xsara could be spec'd in dizzlauto format.

Been offered a Toyota Lucida Estima 4X4 2.2 diesel auto locally, any thoughts anyone

Why diesel? in my experience diesel + turbo + auto doesnt = economy. esp taking into account difference in cost of fuel, and added value of car "cos its diesel its worth more..." open your mind to petrol auto for far far more choice. :)

Run away. The head gaskets make a K-Series seem robust.

Mercs are a good call but really aren't very economical. A ZX/BX/Xsara diesel auto should still deliver 40mpg. Even a Rover 75 diesel auto should do similar, compared to 48-50mpg for the manual.

80mpg is not to be sniffed at...

I'd tend to avoid the Lucida, as DW says. They suffer from HGF but also from cracked / porous heads - to be fair their poor reputation is due at least partly to the fact that most of them get bugger all maintenance. They're a nice enough thing to drive when they're running right, but they're not great on diesel as they're a heavy old lump and the engine has to work pretty hard to keep them moving. I used to get about 35mpg out of mine.
