This is now surplus to requirements. runs and drives spot on, no OMGHGF (the HG was done about 2-3 years ago when it overheated due to failed thermostat, purely as a precaution) It has MOT until November, i think, may even be december 2013, passed the last one only needing a tyre and a back box. 78k on the clock which I reckon is genuine, I did have service history up until 68k (in 2011) but that's probably lost. It's a 1.6 petrol Xsi with electric front windows, remote locking, original cd player etc etc, its an unmessed about with car ready for plenty more use. It is as good as it looks. no rust, may be one or two minor scratches.

Only selling as my sister wants her driveway back and I don't want to sell my volvo torslanda to make room. It's simply one car too many.

£350 to get it shifted quick, if no takers I'll have to bite the bullet and stick it on egay. no offers at this price please.

Its in Chepstow, just over the severn bridge in south wales.

Shame - it's a bit of a looker that is.

Hopefully someone with the skillz can get it going again...

Yeah its a bloody good car. I had it off my stepdad who owned it from 1 year old he got a new car and just wanted shot of it, had service history up to about 68k but no cambelt done, obviously. If i had somewhere to put it away I'd hang onto it till I had the time to do it. It's never even had OMGHGF.

What spec is the XSI then? I've never heard of it. Has it got things like half leathers and radio controls on the steering wheel?

Not sure. It's not the top model, kind of a GL spec I suppose. got A/C, radio control on steering wheel, elec windows in the front but manual in the back. not leather.

They're actually very good cars. Apparently, theres even a forum for them.

:oops: I thought the belt was snapped, a quick and wrong judgement based on it starting, cutting out and not restarting and sounding very much as if the belt had gone- like there was no compression. In an idle moment I went and took the cam belt cover off to check. the belt is not snapped, its fine.

I cranked it over until the battery was almost flat and the bloody thing started. ran a little rough at first then it was fine. is this likely to be the start of OMGHGF?

It's never behaved like that before and I don't know whether to trust it.

Still, at least I got a nice ovlov out of the whole business.

Sounds like the hydraulic tappets sticking...I'd get it nice and hot, drain the oil, change the filter and refill with some decent oil.

Had this on Mrs colc's V8 Jag. Wouldn't start, and would spin over really quickly. I feared the worst, but an oil change cured it. Wonder how many poor sods have been ripped off by garages when this happens..........

Phew! Glad I'm not the only one, I was seriously embarrassed about such a monumental misdiagnosis. Well, its still got a huge chunk of MOT on it, so I'll hang onto it for now..it may well be up for sale at some point, it will still be cheap. and running.

Thanks for advice, it had me baffled.

Just a thought but did you just start it for a couple of mins then switch off again the time before it wouldn't start (ie shuffle the fleet around the drive or back it away from the house.

Fuel injected stuff can flood easily if started and stopped before they have chance to warm up and lean off their fuel injector duration.

You try and restart and fuel is already sitting in the manifold and the ecu gives it more fuel as its told by the coolant temp sensor the engine is cold,if it don't catch first go it just keeps injecting and you get bore wash (and fouled plugs) causing loss of compression and a non start.

Bubble shape Micra's and ecotec Vauxhalls are bitches for doing it...

Oh dont I know.

Foot flat to the floor and keep cranking till the bastard fires up and you lose the street in a cloud of smoke -invariably its the wife that manages to do this to the car..

It could also be attributed to a sticking oil pressure relief valve, which is overpumping the tappets, reducing compression. Once it cools, the valves settle back in! Anther side effect is that it pumps oil seals inside out occasionally.

I was thinking of buying this as a project. Probably just as well I didn't as I would have felt so guilty when I found nothing wrong with it!;-)

Aye. My Rover does that. I try to let it run for a minute even if I'm just moving it around.

My K11 Micra does this. The first time it did it I had a sweat on as the engine was spinning like mad with no compression. It was time for work on a Monday and SWMBO was standing on the porch scowling at me. The day before I had moved it around the yard and switched it off. Reminded me of trying to start my brother's XJ8 with worn Nikasil bores.

come to think of it, yes- I moved it out of the garage the 100 yards round the block to park in front of the house then shut it off. sounds likely. just something I've never come across before being more used to diesel and carb'd shite

I had a similar problem an a 1.8CVH Sierra yonks ago, after giving it a bit of boot the thing cut out and when I tried to re-start it the thing just span over like it had no compression, again I though "Bugger there goes the cambelt".

I called out the very nice man in the bright yellow van, he takes of cam cover, nope still in 1 piece, then he umms and aahs and a light bulb goes on behind his eyes. He then strips out the plugs, pours a bit of engine oil down each bore, reassembles and low and behold the thing starts straight away.

Apparently when I ragged it I moved the rings away from the with cylinder walls (or something) and it needed a bit of oil to re-seal it to get compression, new on on me at the time.

i looked at a late face lift 1.4 kettle series 45 for a mate of mine at his body shop a couple of week back, it did exactly the same sounding like snapped cambelt when winding over, he drove it out the night before, i looked timing belt it was fine, i assumed it immobilised itself as the red light was constantly on when winding over so i pissed about with the fob locking and unlocking it and it started when i re attempted

Volvo 5pots (a'la 850/V70) do the same, both mine did it near to oil change time. The first time I expected 20 bent valves, I checked the belt and all seemed ok, but thankfully my local Volvo specialist instructed me on how to get it started again.

In my time as a Green Flag guy, there were always Micra's and BMW 5 series with the symptoms described, easy to pull the fuel pump fuse and crank over until it starts.

It is way too common in my experience,if you didn't know any different you would swear the cambelt had gone,i had two cars on the same drive do it once after they were swapped around and washed..

Sometimes you can just boost (jump leads) the battery, floor the throttle and crank untill it picks up.

Or woop the plugs out, blow torch them and repeat above.

Or remove the fuel pump fuse, foot to floor and crank till it fires up (Micra) then put the fuse back in before it dies again.

On Jags and BMW's with the fuel pump fuse in the boot you can pull the fuse and run 2 wires from the fuse holder up to the drivers seat and use them with a toggle switch to power on and off the pump to get the bitches to run.

Happy days.. :):)
