Volvo 740 estate sale or swap for pre 1990 car...

I'm going to get rid of my 1989 Volvo 740 2.0 GL estate, either sell it as is or swap for a pre 1990 car. I don't really mind, I just want something smaller and a lot more economical.

Tax runs out februaury, mot until march I believe, will have to check though. Has had brand new rear shocks, timing belt done within 3000 miles, oil change, plugs, coolant flush and new antifreeze. Paintwork looks all nice and shiny but with any old car there are some issue, zero rust though.

Has n working alarm and immobilser too.

Few little issues, power steering is stiff on start up, goes back to normal after a minute though? Usual Volvo problem of speedo not working. Also, it used to have a roofrack bolted through the roof, this must've been removed and the holes filled as the filler has sunk a small amount, it doesn't bother me though.

Fuel gauge works fine so does temperature gauge.

Engine pulls bloody well and runs well too, gearbox changes up and down as it should and smoothly.

Huge loadspace with the seats down and has a factory fitted dog guard.

Tow bar with working electrics.

Electric front windows and heated seats and wing mirrors. Mirrors are electric too and all work.

Has had a recent rear exhaust too.

Sad to see it go but I'm only doing short journey in it, and can't afford it right now, especially as Xmas has stripped me of any cash I did have!

Also has the benefit of getting classic insurance, I'm 26, zero no claims and 4 points and its £198 fully comp a year.

Looks like a decent old bus for the money, have some 'GLWTS' - type noises. :D

Also - Why do so many old Volvos you see manage to have such clean engine bays?

Usually, well fitting undertrays. In my experience anyway. Less splash-ups from below. And theyre so reliable that you rarely lift the bonnet. So less filth from above.

Nice barge fella. I love the pre-facelift 740s.

I don't know to be fair, but yes a lot I've seen have got tidy engine bays. To be honest, for the money, this is a perfect workhorse, reliable as hell and will keep going on!

Cruise control has a cable missing that goes to the throttle butterfly so no I'm afraid.

Cheers for the comments

Stiff/notchy steering when cold is a common 700/900 problem and can usually be attributed to stiff steering column universal joints, which catch a lot of heat from the exhaust manifold, especially the lower one. They can usually be made good again by spraying them with penetrating oil to free them off, then applying heavier oil or grease to them to keep them lubricated long-term. The Volvo had the same problem when I first bought it, but I cured it using the aforesaid method 8)

I've been led to believe that a lot of Volvo dealers would steam clean a car's engine bay as part of a service. The Volvo was serviced by an independent Volvo specialist for years before I bought it, which would explain why the engine bay was quite mucky when I got my paws on it

Tidy, that. May I suggest the V*lvo Owners' Club as a source of interested parties?*

Shame your classic policy regards classics as pre 1990 only.

Yeah it is but Xmas is very close, unless someone buys it as a present for someone then I doubt it will sell anytime soon.
