In The Pit Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 "Earlier on today, apparently, a woman rung the BBC and said she heard there was a hurricane on the way... well, if you're watching, don't worry, there isn't!" (Michael Fish) So alot in the press about the anniversary of the Great Storm Of 1987. I was just 8 years old at the time and the sound of the wind woke me up at around 6am I knew something wasn't right from the noise so I got out of bed to see a tree across the road had crushed a Maestro van I then ran in to wake my parents who had slept through it all. Four of my MKII Escorts came from London and Kent luckily they must have been stored safely in a garage or away from any falling trees. What do you remember, what cars do you recall getting crushed or damaged and do you have any photos to post . Heres some images from the internet:

AeroNautiCal Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 Nature's shite smite night! I remember waking up to no electricity, which meant that I couldn't open my workshop that day, I woke my wife to tell her, then we both went back to sleep. It was one hell of a storm!

michael1703 Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 We watched a mk1 cortina being wrecked, it was parked in a garage which was attached to an end of terrace house, the wind got under the garage door and the garage door started flapping open and shut and whacking the back of the car and then with the garage door blown off the wind got under and pulled the roof off and then the walls crumbled in and fell on the roof/bonnet/bootlid

RedSparrow Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 My old local paper (Hastings) did a free supplement of photos like this, I found a copy in a charity shop.I think some of these snaps might've come from there.

holbeck Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 I remember driving to work the morning after in my Opel Manta. Everywhere was just a mass of tree branches, and Mike Smith on the radio having people phone in with tales of doom and gloom.

Negative Creep Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 I was 5 at the time, and can remember it being really noisy that night but our house escaped scot free. There were some massive trees in the local park that all got blown over though. Great pictures, though you do have to feel bad for the owners. I hope they were all fully comp........

RichardMoss Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 I had to drive into central London the next morning to pickup some passports/visas from a Middle Eastern country's embassy - it looked like Hiroshima on "the day after". My mk1 Scirocco was fine (ironically it was a "Storm" model) but the embassy was closed because none of the staff had come in to work.

Micrashed Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 We didnt get too much of a twattering up in Granadaland. I do vaguely remember I had to go into college the next day for something, (a radio exam possibly, I cant really remember now) and feeling ePic at riding my moped through the detritus that littered the streets.

retrogeezer Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 I was 18 and drove to work in my mini occasionally having to mount the pavement to get around fallen trees. We lived in Yateley/Hants at the time which didn't get hit as bad as the south east.
