I am sorry you are depressed, I strongly recommend a short course of low dosage Sertraline for persistent Black Dog. Ask your doctor.

I have been on sertraline but got really bad shakes and twitches, now on fluoxetine, only been on it a couple of weeks and as yet not doing much, just cant be bothered with anything, absolutely no interest in anything, only go out when i have to.

Not helped much by other illnesses and the fact that i become 9oap in few weeks time.

Not wanting to trivialise, obviously - but reading the grumpy thread from start to finish would probably have that effect on anyone. Try the grin thread or the eBay thread, or someone's spottings. Or Philibusmo's Y10 weldathon if it helps to remind you there's always someone worse off. (Although I don't believe that does help.)

Sorry, can't help with welders in Essex.

Simple things: listen to optimistic music (I put on Mozart's Magic of Figaro when glum), and change something in your life. Take up a new activity, even if it is only playing chess online. Exercise, even a little. Endorphins are nature's anti-depressant.

At least the welding is doable, that's a good thing. Fluoxetine takes a couple of weeks to get working, like most anti-Ds, but personally I found it's one of the better ones to live with, just to pick you up and get you going again.

Definitely get yourself out of the Grump thread, that's not going to do you any favours :P Immerse yourself in the positive stuff on the site, in particular the One Picture thread which is great for chasing away the blues.

Paroxetine (aka Seroxat) helps keep me sane but I did have a bad reaction to another SSRI (Citalopram) which was a horrible experience.

My doc favours the "talking therapy" approach too and whilst I was sceptical at first, I have found this helpful. Maybe worth investigating?

Good luck with that and the car. :D

My moods are up and down like a yoyo and can get really, really down. I guess it's some sort of manic depression but I can't be arsed to see a doctor. Everyone gets depression of some sort.

Best thing for depression IMO is going on long walks. Exercise is good of course and when walking, you can set your mind to good stuff. It's also very important to have loads of mates, and see them all regularly. Don't bore them shitless with tales of woe. Can't help with the welding though.

People struggle on with mental ill health when they would see a doctor for a physical ailment. I have done a bit of talking cure with a good shrink, who is very much a doctor and not some hippy, and a bit of pill popping, prescribed by the same doc. I was worried about the latter, but it turned out OK.

SSRIs can take a good six weeks to reach full effect.

Who was it on here who recommended that if you are feeling down you should go to google images and put in the word trike?

Works for me. :D

I have found having a few interesting research lines - my current interest is dual sport motorcycles Kawasaki KLR 650, I also have an active interest in Electric cars.

Of course the camaraderie from the fine people on here definitely helps me to avoid pointing Mr Smith and Wesson at my head

Depression....An awful thing. Been there. A dark and lonely place, but truly only a place that exists in the mind... The mind belongs to you, and is yours to shape and change. Medication helps, but in the long term it really is a case of 'confronting your devils and giving them a properly good shoeing'

Think of the mind as some twunt on eBay, it exists and it can be a right mong, but ultimately you don't have to listen to it or buy what it is selling. You are in charge after all! Not a sermon, truly. Just a 'been there, done that and fcuked it right off' kinda thing......

Am not righteous nor religious,* so am fully prepared for the verbal abuse that may be on its way here! :D

*And I DO NOT have, nor ever have had a beard! Despite the username.... A beard would render this post useless

What has already been said.

can't help with the welding, keep out of the grumpy thread, talk and exercise.

My doctor put me on Citalopram but after a while he sent me to therapy.

What really helped me was talking to someone who had already been through depression.A friend of mine went through severe depression and while walking our dogs (fresh air and exercise) I would just listen.A few years later when it struck me (I even moved away for a while, it was that bad) my friend was there for me just listening as I talked about my problems.Actually getting a dog could be good for you as it forces you to go out and get some fresh air and exercise.

This is assuming daveb47 has the cash and the health to be able to keep a dog: we don't know a great deal about him, other than he's been very open about his depression, but not about what the root cause is. There are many excellent suggestions about what various people have done when they have suffered from the "black dog", but each person must find their own way through it. Talking to like-minded people is a start, though, so although I cannot help you with the welding (even though I would love to - I'm in Yorkshire so there's a distance thing in the way) I would love to hear more about old chod: perhaps daveb47 could start a thread about some other old cars he's had, and adventures that have unfolded with them?

Can't help with the depression, although maybe the diesel Escort has got something to do with it?

Anyway, as for the welding, there used to be a place in Upminster Bridge, behind the car sales place opposite the Bridge House pub, that were decent. I'm talking years ago mind, but it might be worth a look, see if they're still there. Assuming it's not all just Luxury Executive Apartments these days.

It is depressing reading how many of you have depression......I have bouts the same as anyone else does, but what works for me is unlikely to be of any help......good health to you.

Irrespective of your medication, it's your perspective that would benefit from change!

Perhaps consider looking for a voluntary organization near you, as doing some, (any) voluntary work may well have an extremely beneficial effect on you, in ways that you couldn't possibly have imagined.

At the very least you'll have a reason to go out, and you'll meet some new people and potentially take new interests in things. Also consider walking, not to any specific destination, just for the pleasure (and exercise) of it, also visit your library and have a look at what's on offer, as time spent reading is time well spent.

Take up swimming, it's fun, healthy and invigorating, and you may well benefit from free/reduced membership, and your Doctor may be able to help in getting you free membership to gym and swim facilities.

Simply by being out, you've improved matters, rather than being in a self imposed 'house arrest'.

And stop reading stuff which is grumpy!

Giving up is the easiest thing in the world, so don't!

Looks round to try and find a shitter that hasn't got the mentals.... Fails. Is owning chod a symptom?

Be careful what you do to try and get out of it. I've joined a cooking class full of nubile ladies to try and beat my demons. It's awful. Broccoli this and celery bollocks that. Thought next week may be better after a wise man pointed out you can enjoy the scenery and throw the health food away later.

Experts debate whether choddage is a symptom or a cause of doing yer nut in. When I am glum, however, I go off cars.

Chod can deffinately be a cure.....if your buying it, not fixing it, which is why I own the ex_Bol P100

Thanks for replies folks,Quite like my old Escort diesel estate,Its turbo diesel so performance isnt that bad, fuel consumption is good.

Like the suggestion re thread about my cars past.Off to the hospital for tests today including heart scan,i hate going to Queens Hospital.

Had a quad heart bypass 2 years ago,not felt right depression wise since, just absolutely no interest in anything at all.

Dont go out unless i absolutely have to,spend my time on pc browsing or making websites/forums that nobody use......

Totally skint normally,Become oap in 3 weeks time so that aint going to change.

Would love a dog but missus wont wear it....

Anyway, hoping that tests will be good today, have my doubts.

Not really able to work on cars nowadays because of health, wish i could,if i get on ground it takes 3 hours and an engine crane to get back up again.

I will take a look for welders in upminster, thanks for info.

Cheers

Have you put it to your wife that a dog would give you something to care about, give you exercise, and so make you better company for her? Maybe your doctor would support you in this.

Would you like to have a go in one of my bonkers old cars? How about some mid engined Matra magic, or Lotus loonage?

Try playing (non gambling) games online with real people. Chess, for example, on chess.com. Learn bridge? It's intellectually challenging and sociable.

Hypothetical question: you have a dog, and a wife. The dog is barking at the back door to be let in, the wife is yelling at the front door to be let in - which one do you let in first? The dog: it shuts up when you let it in!

Similarly, if you lock the dog in the car and go away for an hour, or lock the wife in the car and do the same, which one is REALLY pleased to see you when you get back? The dog!

Not really sure if this either helps, or is relevant, but....

On the way to see the vet this morning with our 15 year old poorly dog, the bottom nsf ball joint on our oldish Honda Accord let go big time. The car ended up on its knees on a busy Clifton Drive, wheel smashed up into wheel arch, wheel half fallen off, traffic queues building and much loved old dog in the back on the way to vets to be put to sleep.... RAC called, wife and dog went back home in a taxi. RAC guy was bloody great btw. The guy spent over an hour lying in the rain and got the Honda back on its wheels and to the garage.

Maybe it was some kind of 'Dog God Intervention' or summat, but a pretty rubbish morning tbh.

Tis all part of the bigger picture I suppose!

Not really sure that this has a point... Sorry! Other than to say that most of us are in similar boats when it comes down to it.

A pain for sure, but nobody ever said that life was meant to be fair!

Dogs are great until they get old.... Much like our old chod.

Sadly, 15 year old dogs can't be repaired as easily!

:(
