Cheap auto

Hi all

its been a while since I've been on here, mainly because its too moreish. I've done something bloody stupid which is really frustrating and means that I've been forced into being a passenger. Whilst attending a large classic car event in Yorkshire a fortnight ago, I managed to break my left foot and as a result I'm stuck in a plaster cast to the knee. This state of affairs is likely to last 6 weeks at least and as a result I cannot drive any of my cars, probably for a good while after that too as they are all manual.

Are there any cheap automatic cars out there that the good folk on this Forum can recommend?

Pete-M has just found a beige CL600 that runs perfectly but doesn't stop well...

It's your lucky day.

Buy brookjims small and economical Merc and be a pimp click me :D

Before I clicked the link I had visions of a B reg 190 E in sumptious pea green, then upon clicking I'm greeted with a motoring equivalant of Nigel Havers.

It looks lovely, but I'm poor and I have a feeling that car would rape my wallet very roughly and use no lube whatsoever.

I bought a 'N' reg Saab 900 (GM not classic) 2.0i auto 5 door last November for £370 off fleabay, with a bit of tax and 8 months MOT. It only had 110k on the clock. Sailed thro' its MOT this June and has only cost a back box and some bulbs so far. It's solid and rust free as well. But bloody dull and un involving to drive, not much poke and average 25mpg, but it just keeps on going. And all the electrics work. Friend who's a Saab specialist sez these autoboxes are much better than the weak ones used on previous 900 and 9000.

These GM models are pretty much unloved and can be picked up quite cheap.

Yes I've heard that SAAB's are pretty good, as a mate of mine had a proper 900 and loved every minute of it. I've been having a mooch on fleabay but I'm not seeing anything cheap with tax + mot

This is proper cheap. And with a bit of luck you might get 6 weeks out of it before the gearbox implodes.

Cheap auto motoring you say?

Go sub 1549cc for half-price tax, and pre-1992 for half price insurance.

This one's diesel too:

SRSLY though, with this one, you literally can't go wrong:

Wuvz, you should get this guy into your Alfa 75! its painfully cheap and causing me to run around with my hands down my trousers. If village_idiot here took it on I would be able to forget all about it which would make life a lot easier.

Alfa 75, the car where the designer came to work with just a ruler and had to draw round a Lira coin to do the wheels?

The same bloke who decided that the windscreen washer fluid low level warning deserved a bigger red light than the brake fluid warning and decided that the best place to put the electric window opening switches was up the drivers own nostril?

S'my kindacar.

I would be driving my Ami now if it hadn't been for those pesky kids

Didn't someone have a BX auto for sale ... messerschmitt owner?

My Volvo isn't for sale any more - I'm enjoying it too much.

If my insurers will let me put somthing fairly new and sensible on the policy it would make my life easier. Going to call them on Tuesday and find out. No point looking at a late 90's auto if the man from Peter James he say no way.

A good cheap auto? Any Vauxhall, particularly an Astra (I've got one in stock...)

What about anything 4X4, easy to get in and out and usually auto. Dirt cheap thanks to high fuel cost and recent rumours of impending price hike could mean some panic selling coming. Then if you're done with it by the time the snow is due to appear and murder all our kittenz, you could benefit from panic buying.

Good thinking... a neighbour has bought a tax exempt 109 Landie just because of last winter.

There's a 560SEC for sale on here..... cheap to buy, but not to run...................! Does that matter?

my BX 16TGS Automatic is with a new owner - and now residing in Bristol. It was a 1990 so qualified for classic insurance - even with the fly by night classic insurers!

It was replaced by an XM 2.0 TCT Turbo Automatic - lol

I'd be looking for a Volvo 740 auto. Cheap as chips and super-robust (interior plastics aside). They'll do 30mpg surprisingly easily too (as will Xantia V6s if you can resist the engine note apparently).

Oh and I sympathise greatly. I also fell over at the same event, was also sober, hit my head on the ground but was saved from any injury by the cushioning effects of my trilby. I don't just wear it to make the ladies drool.

The problem with my Alfa is that it'd need the overfuelling-at-idle issue sorting out before it was really useable as a daily. At the moment it's fine on a run but a bit of a PITA around town.

No, what Idiotboy needs is a Ligier Ambra. Cheap to run, turns on a sixpence, and you can park it nose in to the kerb if you want. And the petrol-engined version will do 60.

Alternatively, would you be able to wangle a '93 Legacy GTB auto onto your FJ policy? Not the most economical car in the world mind, but silly quick for an old estate.

Just seen a rover 216gsi on auto trader,92 on a j plate, automatic, sensible miles, honda engine, tax n test, looks the biz and only £399.00.Worth a look but its in luton so distance might be a problem.

I second the Granny recommendation. They're very, very comfortable, usually well-specced, reliable and reasonably easy to fix. And you should be able to find a pre-92 one for insurance purposes. Peter James don't really like anything younger than 20.
