Are there any cars you have owned and regretted selling?

I'm probably in the wrong thread here, is there an "Are there any cars you have owned and regret scrapping" thread?

Anyway, the cars I wish I still had would be:

Sunbeam Rapier Mk3 reg RO 7897 scrapped

Triumph 2000 Mk1 PDB331H written off by my dear wife

Either of my Citroen CX Familiales both sold on

1964 Slough built Citroen DS sold for parts

Volvo 740 saloon. The only car I bought new, traded in for an estate when it had 225000 miles on the clock.

The rest can rust in pieces.

The one car I regret not buying was a DS Chapron for £2000 in 1986ish.

I regret scrapping my first 2CV. It only needed about £100 worth of welding, but that was shit loads back in 1995 when I was working at Bristol Street Motors as an office oik. A local garage had an F-plate 2CV with a duff chassis, so I chucked the bodyshell away from my first 2CV, stuffed the engine in my shed and revived the F-reg one. It was never as good. (the engine went on to power my next purchase, a Dyane. When rot claimed that, the engine when went into an Ami owned by a friend. Got around a bit that one).

Another one I forgot. I feel bad about getting rid of my bargain £375 Alfa Romeo V6 Lusso as well. I got terrified by it after it suffered a major brake binding incident. These days, I'd just rebuild the caliper. All I did was snap the bleed nipple off and then flogged it for £300. That was a truly superb machine thinking about it. Working air con - working everything in fact except the headlamp washers. For an Alfa, that's remarkable. ZF auto gearbox was an absolute delight too. You don't see £300 164s for sale very often now. What an idiot!

My mk1 Honda CR-V - best car I ever had, a spotless, low-mileage one at that. I only had it a year but in that time it towed heavy trailers, helped me move house, got several people to and from work in the snow and was totally, completely reliable. However, it did 20mpg on a good day which was getting very expensive and when I came into a bit of money, I decided to 'upgrade' to a 4 year old Peugeot 307 SW diesel which I think is probably one of the worst decisions anyone has ever made ever. I cannot work out how on earth I thought it would be an improvement. Long story short, it was plagued with DMF judder, endless electrical problems, brake problems, trim falling off and crappy paintwork, I eventually ended the most miserable 6 months of motoring ever by trading it in with a serious engine fault for over £2000 less than I'd paid for it and getting a slightly tired Astra Coupe to tide me over. The trader who bought it had to spend over £1000 on repairs, only for it to come right back a few weeks later with the same fault, I felt a bit guilty at the time. I'd have another mk1 CR-V tomorrow if I could justify it, stuff the fuel economy!

Mmmmm my list is endless. The Jensen I spent 2 years restoring then sold when the fibreglass body started blistering again. Or the Maserati spyder that replaced it. Both worth considerably more now. Also wish I had kept the thornycroft fire engine straight 8 rolls royce engine and 6 wheel drive but it did weigh over 6 tons. I think I regret all the classics I have passed on over the years even the panhard 25bt which although serious fun was a big money pit. The good news is that I have just got a fine example of what was my first decent car (the rough old datsun 100a doesn't count) a renault 18ts, which is bringing back all those great memories even though I think the genuine 26000 miles that practical classics claimed was original doesn't seem quite right. Is there a show us your fleet page ?? I will have to post some of the classics I have owned, the dinky donuts bedford cf was pretty special or the mk2 granada hearse complete with recovery truck light bar mmmm more regrets now !!

MK2 Cortina, CLT 106H. Gifted to drinking buddy after he rolled his Vitesse.

Austin 3 Litre, RJH 70H. Left during house move, for later collection, only to find it vandalised.

Rover P5B, MAL 575K. (I think) Partially stripped awaiting paintjob and paintshop went bust, was pushed outside for three months while I was out of the country. Scrapped :(

Vauxhall Cresta, 597 YBH. Dissolved.

Citroen DS, FTV 326L. Expired.

Puch 250 SGS, 747 YRF. Failed to proceed and left in bedsit bathroom on 3rd floor.

Triumph 3TA.... reg forgotten. Stolen.

Land Rover 88", WJB 886H. Left at work for weekend when I was at a wedding, came back to find it stripped and impounded by stolen vehicle squad, then crushed pending inquiry. Cunts.

Standard Vanguard, 548 DRL. Filler fell out.

Mercedes W115 200 Petrol (1970) UTN 496Y. Part exchanged for Mk2 Cavalier... (achieved 1982 value... scarpered sharpish subsequently!)

Many more, these just stick in my throat.

I don't usually regret selling any of my old motors - however this one was special..........

Bought as a fun fast cheap car, a week before finding out that I had secured a promotion at work which meant I would be travelling the length and breadth of the country. At the time the company weren't fussed whether I hired a Europcar Focus or use the Alfa (the policy has since changed  ) - so obviously despite average 25mpg I used the 156 for 2 glorious years and claimed the expenses. Obviously fuel was a massive expense but I took the mileage from 45000 to over the magic 100000, spent plenty of cash at my friendly Italian specialist on routine servicing and as with every other Italian car I've owned since 1992 I didn't suffer ANY mechanical problems!

Sold because I fancied a change, whacked it through Bawtry auction and pocketed a measly £700. I'd convinced myself that the encroaching floorpan/sill rust issue would only get worse but with hindsight it wouldn't have cost much to repair. I know it's been said to death but you really must own/drive/steal an Alfa at some point in your motoring life. :(

Of yes it's still spotted occasionally around the Doncaster area - if you spot the owner flag him/her down, tell them to put it in second gear and fucking floor it.......

Yes. The ones I regret most though would be

'99 Mercedes Sprinter. Low mileage and tidy but needed money spent on engine repairs. I really should have just bit the bullet and fixed it. Not a week goes by where I don't miss it.

'99 Alfa 145 Cloverleaf. It was costing an absolute fortune and I just couldn't justify throwing more money at it so sold it. I knew even then that I would end up regretting it and its always going to be the one I missed most.

'85 Renault 11 TXE Electronic. Sold in 2004 at a time when I had completely lost my old car mojo. It was properly mint and needed nothing doing, probably one of the best left. Sold far too cheap but DVLA says its still around and I've have it back like a shot.

Lancia Thema LS Turbo - as seen at Cholmondley last year.

I do miss it as it was a properly fast and comfortable car. I did a few thousand trouble free miles in it, but I was constantly worried something was going to break. The steering was a bit sloppy, and the torque steer could be a handful; these combined did occasionally make it scary when over-boost kicked in. It surprised a lot of German rep mobiles and was huge fun ... After 1200 miles and over £300 in v-power in one week I replaced it with the sensible/boring VW diesel.

Most of the cars I currently have I know I'll regret selling if they do go, so I'm holding on to them as long as I can

Alfasud Ti Green Cloverleaf. A638 XKU. Loved that car, but just got bored, it was taking up space, so had to go. Didn't last too long afterwards, according to DVLA, which is a pity, as it wasn't that bad.

I'd have another one, but they're getting a bit rich for me, now.

KMB850L, a pimento red triumph stag, owned it for about 7 months in the summer of 1984,100% reliable and the only stag ive seen before or scince with no overdrive and no soft top fitted from new.Would love to think it still exists but its highly unlikeley as the rot was beginning to set about it all those years ago.Got to be realistic cos if it does exist and i bought it back it wouldnt make me 22 yrs old again nor would it give me my robert smith (the cure) hairstyle back and it would probably feel a bit spindly and gutless and 18 mpg aint very attractive these days so its best left as a memory.p/s got 1600 quid for it, in 1984 that was a good shout and it wasnt so bad cos it was replaced with a cx gti XYK920T, the bollox 25+ mpg and it cruised easy at 110,something the stag would never do.

To all those who regret selling their Alfa:

Alfas are like yachts, it is far better to use someone else's. That way they have all the hassles.

I rented an Alfa at Glasgow airport and had an absolutely marvellous time hooning up to the Isle of Mull and doing the full circuit. It was perfect for the trip, especially the road out to Iona where I was travelling with indecent haste that involved more than 2240 pounds weight.

When I dropped it off at the airport the nice young lady looked carefully all around at the paintwork where there wasn't a blemish. Fortunately she did not look underneath because the same cannot be said. It did tend to bottom out rather regularly.

All done on airmiles as well. :D

Yes my Talbot Samba S, I both do and don't regret it. I'd like one myself, but the work the chap who bought it from me had to put into it, I doubt I'd ever have got done. So in that respect I suppose it was better for the car. Also I should never have sold my Jimp!
