Hi, I'm MikeKnight and..

.. I love shite cars. :D

Been asked to introduce myself properly and post pics of my Triumph GT6 Mk1, so here you go. I only bought it a few weeks ago, used to have an MG TF160 that I spent far too much money on but now I find that utterly boring and decided to sell it. On the plus side it's a hobby that's cheaper than if I went.. for arguments sake.. golfing, fishing, or skiing; but I'd look just awful ski-fishing in golf pants.... actually that sounds pretty fun.

On the flip side of the coin, this is my Rover 200 which I got for just 400 notes. It's my cheap runabout and I'm scared to say that I love it. It has all the acceleration of a wet fart but it's fantastic for just cruising up and down the motorways of England which is what I find myself doing in a car 90% of the time. Don't care if I put miles on it. Don't care if it gets dinged (ok maybe a little). Only problems are it needs a new clutch (cheap) and a timing belt (cheap because I can do those in my sleep). The radio is also some weird Spanish thing with a DIN socket for the aerial so had to get a converter.

Now let us never mention the Rover ever again.

The GT6 is a stunner, probably didn't look that good when it was new.

However, it looks like The Rev. Childs has done something to your .org account as the pics of the Rover are u/s .

LOL, I only wish I owned a 1982 Pontiac Trans Am.

Odd about the Rover pics, they were working a moment ago. Ah well. You all know what a white Rover 200 looks like.

Sorry, but it had to be done.

Hi Michael.

Remember, one man can make a difference.....

I still hate your wheels :P

After the car is fully paid off, I'm going to get some wire wheels and white wall tyres.

Give it a bit of 50's flair.. even if it is a 60's car.

Just as well you like cleaning then.

Some things I discovered:

  • [*:2ufwb765]She's running very rich. Anyone behind me on the road gets gassed. It's funny watching Mr Audi Driver back off rather quickly.
[*:2ufwb765]She has a plastic grille and that's why it's black. It should be metal slats that are chromed on the front. Will changed.
[*:2ufwb765]She's a Mk1 but has the differential and rear axle from a Mk2, so she's much better handling than a vanilla Mk1.
[*:2ufwb765]90% of the chrome work is pitted and it could all do with re-chroming. I'll do this when she's laid up having her engine rebuilt.
[*:2ufwb765]Most of the lower body panels (ie the ones you don't touch often, close to the ground) are not lacquered and the paint is flat there, but fine everywhere else.
[*:2ufwb765]At some point her back was broken and this is why the panel gaps (especially on the passenger door) are quite bad.

The last item likely happened before the major restoration that was carried out by the owner before last, originally she was pale blue and the last owner undertook a full body restoration after finding her in a barn. Though he did not correct the slightly warped body. It doesn't make a difference to handling as it's warped by mere centimetres, it just means the panel gaps are really bad and the passenger door looks "saggy".

Have you tried Autosol and some elbow grease?

Can't claim any experience myself but I saw Ed China pull some Triumph chrome back from the brink so it may work*.

*Or may be more wheeler dealers bullshit.

No, Autosol is the cock robin of metal polish miracles and would put a sparkly shine on a turd - but it doesnt last.

Welcome!

What you need for the chromework is some fine grade wire wool and liquid metal polish, the Autosol liquid version is quite good. I don't like the 'paste' types, they just make a mess in my experience.

Hello and Welcome! happy0034.gif

That's a really gorgeous GT6, and I think that the black grill looks good too.

You are on the wrong forum MikeKnight, that is definitely not shite, that is a pile of WANT :?

Trust me the longer I work on it the more shite it'll become.

So, scratch it up with fine wire wool and then polish up with liquid autosol?

I have some chrome to re-do myself.

Just get a bit of fine wire wool, small amount of polish on it and rub. Doesn't need much effort, and just finish off with a clean rag. It's amazing the condition of chrome it can revive.

I've used Spick 'n Span grade 00 with just water on manky chrome (old motorcycles mainly) with jolly good results.

I think I got it in Homebase.

I'll have to have a crack at that.

Certainly cheaper than re-chroming.

Sorry for the necro, but I may be getting rid of the GT6 Mk1 and getting this instead.

I may have found my nirvana.

Watch this space. Negotiations are underway!

I only do rare cars, if I see someone with the same car I act like a woman who's shown up at the party in the same dress as one of her friends.

I swore I would never sell/trade the GT6, but I count this as trading up.

If you're into hardcore obscurity you need to be moving on from a GT6 sharpish, OSI looks marvellous
