Shite Car - April 1982

Just bought a copy of Car magazine from April 1982 off Ebay, because it featured a 3 car test including a R5 TL. It contains a veritable festival of shite! And some fabulous journalism too, courtesy of Setright & co. Copyright on magazines only lasts 30 years, so I'll be putting a few scanned pages up here to share, hope that's OK.

Other shite featured is the Manta, Carlton (revision that never happened), R9,R18, DMC, and of course the Nova. If any of that whets your whistle, let me know.

I bought hundreds of old CAR mags a few years back, best small room reading material there is as far as I'm concerned. :D

Love the shot of the tortured R5 front tyre in that pic, I'm sure I've got a similar one of an R6 from an edition from a few years earlier.

Given the Renault 5's suspension, that photo was probably taken at around 5mph

More please, liking the extreme driving being applied to the Polo, lifting a rear wheel and everything I remember when I first drove mine after owning a string of 106s being transfixed/panic striken by it's wayward handling.

Old Car magazines are, for me, the pinnacle of motor journalism, waaaay better than the stuff on offer today I just loved reading the extremely caustic GBUs.

I'll scan some more on Monday - scanned the rest of the 3 way test but did it as a pdf like a berk.

This supposed replacement for the Carlton in 1986 looks more like the Granada Mk3. Mistake or something more mysterious?

And finally, a selection of ads.

ACE! 8)

Shows how much computers have come on in 30 years compared to cars from the same era. That Vic would be utterly useless today except as a curio, but I'd gladly schlepp about in a Supermirafiori or a Puggy 104.

I like the fact that it comes with a plug is something to boast about

Great stuff! I still have a soft spot for DeLoreans, as some of our neighbours worked there, however briefly.

Taken from that VIC/20 ad:

"Even play a piece of music to soothe your worried brow"

Those 80's geeks worked wonders with limited system resources, but I can never imagine that music produced from an early 1980's home micro would ever resemble anything like soothing.

Enjoyed reading that, particularly the bit about the Polo which is as true then as it is now of that particular model, though I seem to be getting better fuel economy than they've stated and I can get more speed out of the engine (though not much) without a following wind and a hill.

Unfortunately my car's fuel injection computer has about as much horsepower as the VIC-20, possibly a little more. It's still calculating away, twenty-odd years on!

Considering most people tends to pitch out their home computer every seven to eight years, I think it's going well

:D
