Old Fashioned Scrapyards

Hi,

I am trying to find locations for a returning popular salvage television series. The premises of the series is that we follow an architectural salvage expert around the county as he tries to find interesting items to buy, restore and sell on. In the series we visit a range of locations from scrap yards to country estates.

Last series we visited some great scrap-yards including LC Hughes & Sons in Bicester, Chris Smudgen-Smith in Buxton and The Tites yard in Dorchester. Does anybody know of any other good old fashioned scrapyards?

Ideally I am looking for locations which has some other items as well as cars. It would be great to hear about any old fashion yard even it if a private collector owns it.

Thank-you for your help.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Rory

Furber's scrap yard Roving Bridge, Whixhall, Shropshire is pretty good, ditto David Kelly's yard near Wrexham.

Would any private, ahem "collector" want attention drawn to his "collection" for fear of a visit from some council goons?

Harry Buckland's in Churchdown is an old-fashioned yard and often has some old stuff in it - everything from a Morris Minor to MGB - last year they had a Daimler Conquest cabriolet in - but there's invariably something interesting.

He could always come to mine and pretend to 'buy' my Messerschmitt, or my teak window from the ocean liner Olympic - but, quite frankly, he wouldn't be getting them for real!

Drew can find his own salvage, if he's so 'successful'

This is very true, he seems to make a big enough mark up to afford to do some speculative picking of his own?

Mark up doesn't equal profit though, anyway i like the show, looking forward to another series.

having said that, Drew does get paid by the production company and gets to sell the stuff for a profit (hopefully). He has a double pay day. He can come round my new gaffe, haggle the price on a bubble car (I'll let him 'buy it' for £7k, he can 'sell it' for £9k, and it'll look cool on telly), do the same with some ocean liner furniture, silverware and some enamel signs, take it all to Cheshire and then have it brought all the way back in the name of entertainment. He can pay me a few hundred to 'borrow' the stuff and we'll all be happy.

Sounds like good telly to me!

Alternatively, he can go on radio, do a road trip to the petrol station in an Allegro, misfuel it and scrap it.

I think my scenario is better, somehow.

Window from the Olympic = Extremely cool. A local charity shop near me had two beds recently from the Mauretania which sat for ages with no interest. Must be worth a fortune to the right person.

are they still there? I'd buy them if they were reasonably priced. Both Mauretania's were broken in Fife, no.1 at Rosyth and No.2 at Inverkeithing. PM me

Shhhh, don't tell Drew where they are.

My window's from the gymnasium on board. Stands about six feet high and is solid teak. I've quite a lot of paneling from Olympic at hme.

Perhaps he'd be interested in a sliding door Bedford CF, (LHD).

Imagine the entertainment value of that sunroof strategically located (with bath sealant!) on the drivers side bodywork, the custom interior, etc...

Besides which, he and the crew have a jolly trip to France! :D

Try the guy at mountview garage, he has a room full of collectable tat, http://www.mountviewgarage.co.uk/

I'd also suggest my boss if I thought for a minute that (A) we had the time, and (B) he'd actually sell anything.

I can vouch for David Kelly' s yard near Wrexham , loads of a great old shite in there.

I saw a Renault 25 2.9 Baccara in there which started first time with a new battery on it despite standing for years so I bought it. It passed it's mot with nothing more than some new rack boots and brake discs. 3 years later the Baccara is going strong and still flies through it's mot's.

Other than that I can't think of any great old fashioned scrap yards in the north west, they've all become salvage yards with modern bilge in them.

Used to go to some great ones near Padiham with an old mate of mine, David Austin, but they've gone the way of the modern salvage yard too.
