Newbie! SELLING RENAULT DODGE 50 SERIES RECOVERY TRUCK

Indeed, the regs were confusing enough when I was a tester, nevermind now, and hoping that Insurance companies will insist on a test as proof of roadworthiness....loooooooooool. Standard Gov't/Civil Service hopelessness.

As the introduction of this is another example of standardisation across Europe, it will only take one test case for the insurance companies not to be allowed to insist on MoTs for pre 1960 vehicles!

So basically, it may be.......or may not be exempt depending on how big an expert you are on the road and traffic laws of the United Kingdom or summat.

Meanwhile a far more, potentially, interesting story is presented but cannot shift the "Is it or Isnt it" argument which matters fuck all to anybody who isnt going to buy it, thats 99.99999% of the forum members then.

So...how did it go from the first pic to the second? Just how long was it festering away before it was jetwashed,I mean, recommissioned?

Cant comment on anything, but the thread just got interesting with the most recent pics.

Nice truck though, a recovery company local to my work in Edinburgh uses a smashing-looking D-reg example and I see it quite often.

EDIT: I think 'Dodge 50' will be pigeonholed on here from now on along with Protons and D701SWL, whatever the feck the latter was :|

It certainly has got more interesting !!! :?:

So come on arrow .... lets have the full story on this truck as you have obviously known it a while...... unlike me I bought it 2 weeks ago as I was stuck in having to collect a promised Nissan Patrol and no truck to collect it on (bought it down in surrey as a last minute thing, the Merc 814 I went to see was in a bad state)

Its showing 96,000 on the clock - is that genuine?

How come you decided to have it MOT test when apparently it was exempt?

All information about the truck will be greatly appreciated.

thanks

I feel a bit sorry for this guy, he's getting a shoeing about this MOT exempt thing which seems to be about as clear-cut as the laws about using a braked A-frame, it seems to be one of these topics on which the DVLA/VOSA/boys in blue all have their own opinion (which can change daily depending on random factors). PLus his trucks got a fuggin MOT anyway whether it needs it or not.

Surely a Dodge 50 recovery truck is the ultimate shite hauler, I would love it. The garage where I used to work had a Dodge 50 spec lift truck with a Perkins engine, it used to cough out a well impressive smokescreen on a cold morning, would chug along all day at 55-60 though. I fetched something back from Gosforth metals with it once, can't remember what it was though.

Easiest way to solve this would be to sell it to scooters,it would be fucked within a week.

Just wait till pre 1960 cars are MoT exempt! lololololol

I confidently expect a lot of Land Rovers owned by the tight-arsed (i.e. virtually all) shitkickers* around my neck of the woods to be 'officially' pre 1960, whilst looking identical to a knackered, poorly maintained '80s/'90s model.

With a mad sheepdog in the back.

All the time running on cherry.

With no indicators or brake lights, and getting by on one (badly aimed) headlight.

I would put money on one of the 'guardians of the countryside' causing the first major accident involving an pre-'60 MOT exempt vehicle, and triggering OMGmediafrenzy which, for possibly the first time in a long while, would be entirely justified.

*known by some as farmers

Anyhow, going back to the original point of the thread: what is the story with those 'before and after' pictures? Has a quick bit of Wheeler Dealering been done on this thing?

It would appear that there were nearly 3 years between those pictures.

These taken on September 14, 2007:

And these two taken April 9, 2010:

I viewed the exif data in the images, and they are all from the same yard according to matey's flickr account.

Not a quick flip chaps.

What is the story with this truck?? It would be good to know.

I did buy it from a dealer in Surrey 2 weeks ago - no idea of any history except the previous owner/keeper had it from 1996 then some haulage company owner in Ashby de la Zouch bought it ....(this guy had it mot'd last November)

He could have posted some more information besides the before and after pictures ...

One other really random thing about recovery trucks is that (as a rule) people seem scared of ones where the ramps are sort of permanently hinged onto the back like this. I think they probably (slightly) hinder the use of it to recover longer vehicles, though to anyone who bought it they could just cut them off and make slide away 'sleeves' for them under the bed somewhere.

The lack of winch won't help either Faz, maybe make reference to how cheap those Chinese ones are to buy on eBay now. You can get them for about £200 up I think and they're absolutely f*cking rubbish but to someone interested in your truck they won't neccessarily know that.

Have you tried sticking it on here by the way?

Yes it is listed on dodge50.co.uk and their facebook page.

And yes the standup ramps do hinder getting a longer 4x4 on the back (partially the reason I am selling it + payload too low for a kitted landcruiser)

Posted

Say what, a kitted Landcruiser weighs more than 2.5 tonnes?

The old 609D Merc (beavertail) I had seemed to be able to swallow pretty much anything, though with a LWB ex-Parcel Force LDV thing it was right on the limit of the bed length.

It seemed impossible to get it overweight though, anything that fitted on the bed was within the MGW limit and that had a 17ft bed too. Maybe the Mercs were lighter than the Dodges or something.

What are you getting next then?

I might take of the recovery kit to use on another truck and fit a luton box on this beast .... live in option.

Posted

Have you considered taking it off and fitting it to an Iveco 75E14?:lol:

The new Landcruiser VDJ 200 models weigh 2640 KG in standard form ..... might be something to do with the V8 TWIN TURBO monster under the bonnet :P

Older 80s were 2300kg standard and with a winch bumber, 35" tyres, bulbars, etc etc.... soon went over 2600 KG

I think I will go for a Man 7.5T although I have always liked the Merc 811 VARIO units

Posted

I have driven many Euro cargos and Dafs but I prefer MAN or maybe a Merc Vario 811/814

Dealing with other problems tonight :( . Nothing known by myself other than it was sat in a Ashby yard for a few years where I was able to picture it. Never owned or used by myself.

OK Mate thanks, the previous owner (haulage company) are based in Ashby according to the V5.

You wanna hear the beast ROOOAAAARRRR??

WARNING! TURN YOUR VOLUME DOWN!

I started it today after over a week of it being sat out there, this video is of first attempt of starting it, and I know the battery is too small and needs a bigger battery before the winter.

I did warn you !!! :P

It aint too bad really as it warms up it sound better, it might be due new oil and filters which would sweeten it up a little. Just looked at some Perkins engine prices on ebay ....... seems the engine is worth more than the damn truck !

Christ almighty, it's like I'm 16 and hanging off the back of Wullie's milkfloat at some ungodly hour all over again. I wouldn't want to drive one, but somehow that racket is quite comforting  . I've gone wrong, haven't I?

I can believe it would - I had my old lwb 2.3 Fronterror weighed - came in at 1890kg bone on fuel , no steps, bar or driver.

I can never understand how some get away with having 4x4s on some transit type 3.5t recovery trucks... these 3.5t RTs weigh a minimum of 2T on their own :shock:

A mate of mine has one of these in near identical spec. Needs testing though.

Here's another thought.

It also advertises bicuits on the side. Try buying a packet off the driver.
