Nige's newest nonsense

While I'd normally applaud such obvious dedication to shite, it does sound like this could have ended up being rather tragic. Maybe time to invest in a nice, shite beavertail?

Thanks for your concern,Testes. Fair to say they were bemused- dont think they had seen much like it. The Latvian plates on a French registered car concerned them most- but when I established that it wasnt on the road (no, really) they acquiesced. I sounded more like the Swedish chef off the muppets- mangling my Franglais..

Skattrd- I found it by word of mouth. Seller wanted 2k for it- about 1/3 of what it had cost him. Reluctantly accepting it wasnt going to be mine I decided to 'help' & wrote him a nonsense advert to put on Leboncoin. It went on there 3 times at 1500 euros -nary a bite. I then made my new miserable offer & offered hefty chunk deposit up front & (I suspect) his wife nagged him into accepting.

Sending him pics of some of my Eastern chod convinced him I wasnt a 'profiteer' and would need the balance to sort it.....

2.4 tons? So I was told -but its prob a bit less. it felt VERY heavy -but that could be down to sticky wheel bearings, soft rubbish tyres & an inability to steer. Whatever- its not light- & I was def overloaded.

Amazing motor and another great mission. I look forward to seeing more pictures.

And congrats on the Zuk. I have only ever seen two over here (Czech) and both were rotting in farmer's yards.

Wuz - amazing!

It is indeed a really manky D3a -around 1954 vintage. it looks REALLY terrible -even by my standards -but I 'think' its cosmetic. I believe that under the crap there's little structural rust- and that it'll clean up reasonably. But -we havent finished negs yet- I still want more 'off' -before I commit.

The Zuks are fun. its a little FSO truck -called FSC (Commercial) built near Lublin in South west Poland, using the FSO (ex Fiat ) 1500 . I've been looking for a mid range truck to supplant my 403 pickup thats been doing house rebuild duties (- its earned its retirement & ''pretty up'').

I've found a car aware Brit in Lublin who has been tracking some down for me -and I recently bought this one. Its been extensively rebuilt, and I'm told its in good order -for the miserly amount I wanted to pay. I'm still looking for a second- hopefully an ex Council one with a crewcab, & tilt. When I have 2, I'm posting out the A frame, jumping on Ryannair and spending a few days travelling home -where the 2nd will be UK legalised & sold to offset my costs.

DW -you're dead right, I overdid it. Luck & pure experience saved the day. I really do want an old Beavertail - I've been looking for a 'period' one for some considerable time. Indeed, I have made an initial offer on a Hotchkiss lorry- which has been rejected- but is ongoing.

However- taking a beavertail 175 miles into France for a cheap car is too expensive (under our 80% fire sale family rules) -and I had to find a way to do it 'on the cheap'. Last time I took the dolly over, -but P&O cant deal with an empty dolly out, full back. They go into all sorts of seizures- and want to cancel the whole ticket/start over with a 'think of a number' price.

Even this way -the Gaz's single journey cost me over 3 times the return.

However, I have recently bought a much heavier duty A frame -the 3.5 ton version ,with useless brake attachment -but I'll need the 4 wd for that. Its too big for the Legnum.

I took a risk -got away with it. Perhaps, one day I wont.

Buying an ex-council one seems a good idea. Round here they are still using 1970s/80s AVIAs and Multicars and they seem to be well cared for. I hope to be in a position to buy when they decide to sell...!

Its tricky to get the right strategy for cheaply repatriating cars from over the channel. The A-frame is great, but you've always got that worry that someone (either side of the channel) is going to get arsy about the unbraked weight. I wondered if the ideal tool might be a japanese builders pick-up like an L200 or whatever (2wd) cos the ferries tend to let these on as a car, I had no probs taking my P1800 over on car tickets anyway. Then get a decent braked 'low' dolly like the AA used to use and chuck that in the back rather than tow it. Then you will be able to tank down the motorways or whatever at 70 getting half-decent mpg and benefiting from the slightly cheaper french diesel. They can tow some pretty serious weight and the whole outfit will looks semi-respectable. I guess the only downside is all your 'peripherals' like toolboxes, batteries, wheels, towropes etc are all sat in the buck at risk of getting robbed at the motorway services.

Sensible idea Boll.

Dont think there is an ideal answer

Current intention with that D3 is for the vendor to deliver to the docks, A frame onto ferry & dolly home.

If I can find someplace safe in Dover to leave it......

Compromise, compromise..

Hi use eurotunnel with my discovery and trailer. Last time I went over it was £120 return well worth it to be legal and safe and as long as the car is under a couple of tons the disco will haul it along all day at 70

If it's tricky to go out as a car and come back with a trailer, can you tow an old LHD MGB or something and flog it out there? Then come back with something faded and French

Fab purchases Bickle, love the D3 and the ZUK - didn't anyone film your Swedish cheffing?

Brief update that the deal on the Peugeot D3a is now done, finances are being transferred & then we will be arranging a date for transfer to a northern port. Prob mid- late Nov.

When, hopefully, I'll collect it with this (currently resting) in Oostende:-

A 1970 Hanomag matador with a ''spot of rust'' and a damaged screen. Cheap though!

Funnily enough I was thinking about this today:

But I see you have gone for the western equivalent!

Havent got the Matador yet -seller being typically obdurate. Good news is that he is speaking to me (in Dutch- deliberately); so I've a reasonable chance.

Have agreed 'terms' on this though:-

Bought from a senior member of this (& the blue) forum -and sorted to collect Tuesday.

I'm guessing the pintara is for towing duties; a bit more grunt than the legnum?

Sort of missed this thread of late, but there's some epic tat saving going on.

Love the look of those M24 Volgas.

Spent an hour (or so) on the M24 today to discover wafer thin brake shoes, (some even still attached) wet slave cylinders, tired (rather large) brake pipes and a leaky shock. Havent looked at the back end yet. Oh -and the indicator lever fell off...

Happy days
