New Swedish Giffermobile

Well, a big clearout happening at Scooters Towers just now - the 820 is off - taking up too much of my time on repairs. Scoob is about to start costing some serious dosh as well...even if you do the work yourself Scoob parts are not cheap.

So a 740 is turning up next week but a second car is needed.

had to be large, cheap to run, reliable, comfy and not too daft on the petrol - ie no turboz!

so a trawl of car and classic found this...a call was made and a deal done and it is coming to Edinburgh early next month:

A 1989 giffer spec manual Saab 9000S - one of only about a dozen of these left on the road. former director of a Saab dealership owned this one from new - current owner has had it for 14 years and has used it as his old giffer wheels for the last 8 years. Not getting used so coming my way.

Has 'leccy everything and black leather...

no turbo - I like the shape of the earlier 9000's and as it has no turbo it hasn't been buggered around with - can't wait to park my arse in that leccy seat!

Wow, that's well smart. Leather's nice but the pink velour these used to come with is pretty funky too!

I had a 900 8v auto saloon a few years ago with the pink velvety velour interior - it was fantastic - a bit like being on the set of a low rent Swedish 1970's Blue Movie by Private - you know - big hairy m~~~ges and blocks with dodgey sideburns

Very swish, I've always liked these. Its even got its original (or even just fitted) floor mats. Get in!

Is that rather ugly rear numberplate plinth original or an 80s dodgy Saab accessory?

These are ace, I loved both of mine, Shame the gearboxes are a bit crap, as they killed both :(

Oh, on the subject of the 740 War Horse. It's safely tucked up in my parking lot. There's a big street party on Monday, so might be fun getting it out when you collect!

Thoroughly fab. The manual boxes are strong enough IIRC? It's the slushboxes strapped to turbo rocketship engines that don't last.

Mine were both manuals, sadly both broke.

Mine was a snorting turbo automatic and I managed to nurse it along without it grenading. So it's obviously all bollocks.

Definitely the weak point anyway.

That's awesome! Puts me immediately in mind of the cars in this clip:

This isn't a turbo...the na cars are a bit underpowered hench the gifferspec.it's the horsepower of the turbo that lunches the gearbox. Many Saab manual boxes have been changed in error when the true fault is actually a selector bush. Having driver a 200.bhp rover 820..the Saab box is a much tougher affair than the pg1 on the rover. T series engines are capable of huge hp provided the pistons are upgraded. It's the gearbox in the 820 that is the weak link.

Volksy, thanks mate, ill be in Leeds at around eleven. I do need to be back in Durham fairly quickly, do you think the street party could be a real problem?

Lol...only cost 350 as well,

The rover will pay for it either in cubed or restored form.

Thanks for talking me out of cx lunacy last week...this week has been a wake up call that if something goes down on a daily i don't have as much free time as I thought to fix it...let alone restore a cx basketcase. Need to focus my energies on keeping the current cars on the road.

Scooby will be going next.

That looks fantastic! Jealous - if you get bored and want to swap it for a Rover 75, you know where I am
